i've noticed a lot of people having issues with getting sudden alternator noise with their pioneer headunit. if you suddenly get alternator noise, you probably popped the microfuse inside the deck thanks to a poor ground. with a pioneer you MUST ground the chassis of the headunit to the chassis of your vehicle. same with the main ground. if you don't, you will pop that microfuse that's less than half the size of an eyelash. with this fuse popped the headunit tries to seek a ground through the rca's. this can wear out your speakers a lot faster than they should because of constant flutter. any authorized pioneer benchtech can fix this problem in less than an hour if he can get right to it. just taking a couple extra steps during the install will save a lot of headaches later on.

in defense for pioneer, i agree they make a beautiful deck at a great value. i sure do love mine.

I thought that problem was rendered with the new decks. However, good tip.

I have heard of some issues but I've personally had 7 diffrent Pioneer HU in 3 diffrent cars and have always used the harness ground and have had zero noise problems so it's not a must in every case but is a fairly common issue.

i've owned 3 pioneer decks and the only one that didn't pop the microfuse was the deh3400 that i had back in 2002. other than that, i had issues until i finally grounded the chassis of the deck. maybe it's just the stock wiring in gm trucks that isn't capable. either way, i'll use the stock power and ground for my dad (he keeps his barely audible most of the time), but not me.

Well I sent mine in a week ago for repair. Its a p860mp. Anyway, this may seem like a dumb question, but where on the case do you attach the ground?

A friend told me about this about two years ago when I got my DEH8600. He told me to get an Alpine because the noise suppressors in Pioneers were very fragile. He never gave an explanation for the bad noise suppressors though. Mine was grounded using the factory harness and I had no noise problems. I just had mechanical problems with the face.

there's a place in the middle of the rear of the deck where a screw that came in a bag of parts with the deck goes in. if you lost or threw away that little bag of parts that came with your deck, maybe it's a common size a hardware store has. you'll want to attach at 16 or 14awg wire with a ring terminal crimped to the end to the back of the deck.

possibly but not sure. if your getting major alty whine with the rca's plugged into the amps you probably blew that little fuse that's half the size of an eyelash. best thing you could do to troubleshoot is borrow someones deck, hook it up, and see of the noise stops. i keep a spare deck around specially for this reason.

you got lucky on the grounding issue. my guess is some stock wiring is heavier than others.

most likely. best way to prevent the weak fuse from popping is to doubleground the headunit to a heavyduty ground. just using the stock harness or just using the main ground directly to the battery or frame is asking for trouble. this info is coming straight from a local pioneer benchtech that is trying to keep the same pioneer from coming back twice. one day i walked in to ask about getting an amp fixed and he had pioneer decks stacked to the cieling all with the same problem

Awesome...looks like I'll be sending mine back.

Just got a Pioneer DEH-P880PRS, I connected the ground to the harness on my 1999 Olds Intrigue...thought it would suffice (my clarion had no problem with it)...guess not.

I'm getting hissing sounds on volume 1...goes away on volume 0 of course. It stays constant though, doesn't get louder as volume is turned up, but it does overpower the music. It just hisses with the ignition off.

With the ignition on....some loud as hell noise, sounds like a constant bass test tone.

I have the internal amp turned off, all externally amplified.

Guess my microfuse is blown? I grounded the chassis and the ground wire from the stereo harness to the vehicle chassis afterwards...but no dice, except the battery voltage meter went up to 14.4.

I just tested the rca shield to chassis resistance with my multimeter, 0.5 ohms of resistance....so the fuse isn't blown...

I plugged in a ground loop isolator I had laying around, it lessened the noise...but it was definitely still there.

Also, the noise doesn't vary with engine RPM...

I just bench tested it, off of a computer supply and hooked the preouts into my stereo....sounds pretty good.

Guess I'll try a power noise filter next, that I happen to have laying around....I noticed pioneer has one on the line already though...

standard....now it just hisses at start up, then I change source and it goes to the constant farting noise as I describe it so technically. \:o

Back to the stock Bose for now....sure does suck to install a brand new head unit to find out it's crap.

the 3 times i've popped that fuse i've had engine noise. looks like install might be to blame. bad rca's can cause this.

Why is then that when I first started it up, it just hissed....turn it up and all of a sudden it starts making crazy noises (like a repetitive bass test almost)? Then I turned it off, turned it back on, hissing again and turn it up a little and it starts making the bass tone noises.

The RCAs work fine with my Bose with the OEM1 adapter? Should be the same with the Pioneer.

have you changed out amps just to see if that helps? i've had a bad amp pop the fuse once from sending voltage through the rca's. also try moving the rca's around where they lay and see if the noise changes.

ive done an install for a buddy that had a similar problem. Pioneer head and a Directed amp. when he drives over bumps, noise will come in. if he hits another, it stops. as if its shaking something on and off. moving the rca's helps. i think something is loose on the amp where the rca's are. im not sure... yeah.. good luck

I had another go at it...reinstalled the thing.

Moved the RCAs...no change at all.
Grounded the RCAs to the chassis...nothing.
Tried a different amp....nothing.
The only thing that removes the noise is putting my Bose stereo back in.

Just a note, I used to get a high ringing sound from my OEM-1 adapter (preouts from the bose), but I moved it into the radio cavity and no noise at all...no hissing, nothing.

I installed the pioneer, engine off, ignition switched on....we're talking LOUD hissing from the Pioneer (amp gains were turned all the way down). Something has to be wrong with this thing internally....it is boxed up once again for return.

once a pioneer starts making loud noises NOTHING will stop it until it's repaired.
