Just find a competition and enter it. \:D

If you're interested enough to ask the question, then you're interested enough to learn what it takes to be competitive in what you want to do.

If you think your stuff is good enough, then come on out and join the fun.

If you aren't sure if you've got the right stuff, but feel compelled to ask the question anyway, come on out and give it a try!

There are plenty of people around that are willing to help you once you start competing (myself included) .

You may find out that the equipment and install you have can be quite competitive, or you may find out from some knowledgeable people in your area that you need to change your approach a little.

I am pretty sure that once you just enter a competition, you'll have a good time and make some new friends. What is there to be afraid of?

All this "should I?"/"shouldn't I?" is silly. Just do it! \:D

That goes for a whole lot of things to consider in car audio...and the rest of life for that matter. Someone didn't teach these people how to make decisions in life or something?

Yes, I agree. People should stop asking. It'll probably only get worse, what can you do?

Bob, your point is well taken. Thanks for showing me your car up close at Daytona! Maybe you remember talking on Saturday to me. I'm Jason, also running Xtant (not the high end though)
in my F150. How did the car do on Sunday?
Well hope to bump into you again sometime and get a listen to that car, it's my kinda ride.

Hi Jason.

Yes I remember you.

The car did well. I took home two 1st place trophies: one in IASCA StreetX 1-600 and one in MECA Custom.

What's up bob, thanks again for use of the socket and ratchet at SBN, to put the headliner back in my van.

But anyways I had a question for you? \:D

I won SBN db drag SS 3-4 class with a 163.0 on the new sensor, should I compete? :p \:D

On second thought...

Go ahead! enjoy yourself! and keep on winning!!

Take care, and see you at SVR.

It's only 4... but I didn't get the first one until 2001. I started competing in 1994, unless you count the one event I made my girlfriend at the time enter her car in with the small system I installed in it back in '92.

I had to start somewhere, sometime, just like everyone else. It took me 2 years to be consistently successful at the local level, and another 2 years to get consistently good at the regional level. Then I took 3+ years off from competing to be a sound quality judge. When I re-entered the lanes I found consistency at the national level events.

The point is, it takes time. Time to ask questions; time to talk to people; time to learn. If you don't start the process sometime, somewhere, you'll also never achieve whatever goals you set for yourself.

Just do it! \:\)

I thought I would add a little bit to this. For first USACi and dB Drag competition I had two Lightning Audio Bolts in sealed boxes and a 80 watt 4 channel amplifier. Placed first in USACi due to power classes, and didn't make top 8 in my class for db Drag. You just need to find the organization that your system fits best in and just go for it.

I have since decided to do SQ, and my first show I had factory head unit, factory front speakers, a 100 watt 2-channel amp, powering the same Lightning Audio subs. Placed 2nd in my class out of two, but I got a lot of helpful hints on how to make my system better. It wasn't flashy but the class I was in it didn't need to be flashy. Again, research the organizations and just find the organization that you think your system will do the best in, and don't be afraid to ask question, or a demo of other people's cars. Listen to the judges tips also.

Sometimes I think what happens is people worry about getting fully pwned their first timwe out without ever seeing that a lot of install are really just basic nuts and bolts installs that sound good. But the magazines always show just the nicest of the nice.. so I'm afraid it wards off a lot of noobs that don't realize that there are dues to be paid, unless you have a rich daddy, then you can have a competition car in a month \:\)

I agree, noone wants to go out and be embarrased. Most people, including myself dont know exactly what to expect at local competitions. However, that being said, i think my system sounds pretty good and ive been interested in sq competing, so I'm gonna give it a shot.
Where can I find out about local Competitions? There must be some kind of website with national listings, yes ?

The year is winding down. I do know that in the Atlanta area next year there will be at least 3 MECA/IASCA shows. In Alabama there should be around 7 or 8 MECA shows. There are also a handfull of DB Drag Shows in Alabama and Georgia.

Depends on where you live in GA. Like Andy said there is quite a bit going on. In Dawsonville there will robably be 3 IASCA or MECA events, Neil Barber hosts quite a few dB Drags down in Thomasville. Augusta has a few dB Drags. IASCA and dB Drag are prevalent in the panhandle of Florida. Over Athens way there shuld be an event or two. Alabama has quite a few MECA shows.

I think that about covers it:)

I have a couple questions, but first, I am changing out 75% of what's currently in my Jeep, so don't bother too much reading the signature.

1) My Jeep is a daily driver. Jeep's being the equivelant of brick walls on wheels, I have a few rock hits on my windshield.

Are any of the cars in these competitions Daily Drivers, and if so, is it ok to have a few highway battle wounds?

2) What kind of music is played during a SQ competition... do you bring your own music or is it a standard song(s) that everyone has to use?

3) If you place, do you get a trophy or something? How do you have proof for your friends back home that you won/placed?

daily drivers are fine. You still have to give it a thorough detail as if you were going to give it to the president. I plan on competing this year and I have about $5000 worth of body damage. Im still going to wash it very well and give it a really good wax job.

the music that is played is from that organizations competition cd from that year. check out ISASCA, USACi, and MECA websites for info on purchasing their cds. usually 1,2,and 3 get trophies. all competitors get a score sheet.

If you compete in a regular class in IASCA (class with SQ, Install, RTA and SPL), body damage is not to be considered, but as said above, the vehicle should be detailed

If you compete in SQC in IASCA, they just judge Sound Quality--nothing else. Just how does it sound. So how the vehicle looks doesn't matter at all.

In MECA they just judge Sound Quality. How the vehicle looks means nothing.

I have no clue about USACi.

MECA has the rules on line. http://www.mecacaraudio.com so does usaci http://www.soundoff.org . IASCA makes you purchase a rule book to find out what the rules are

I compete in MECA and IASCA.

IASCA used to have their rules online. they must have taken them off somewhat recently. that sux. I have pretty much given up on the exterior on my car. the people of colorado have no respect for other peoples cars. I think i have more dents from people opening their doors into mine than the $3k worth of hail damage. I was also forced to run over a large black plastic chunk on the interstate recently which left deep groves in both my front and rear bumpers. the car has officially turned into a beater. the interior though, I pay special detail to when modifying. I have complete control over how it looks and that is all that matters to me. i will never win a best of show contest but that doesnt stop me from creating the best SQ vehicle I possibly can. \:\)
