Since many topics are asked ad nauseum, I am posting this to eliminate a few repitive questions.
1. Should I compete?
Yes. Why not? While it's great to come out of the box as a beginner and win like mad, it doesn't happen often. One thing about competitions - it makes you better and you learn more about what you're doing. It's a gathering of like-minded people who share your hobby and interests. In addition to the education factor of learning about new and better ways to do things, you'll make a lot of friends/meet a lot of people.
2. What is SPL?
SPL is abbreviated for Sound Pressure Level - the test of "loudness". SPL is measured in deciBels (dBs).
3. What is SQ?
SQ is abbreviated for sound quality. It is subjectively judged by trained officials from the show's sanctioning body. The judges will use the same media (cd) and track in your vehicle as every other vehicle in the competition. The judging is based on how well and accurately the sound is reproduced. Most judging CDs have stage maps and information that will tell you what you should be hearing, coming from where. In most sanctioning bodies, there is an SPL component to the SQ judging. Each organization does it a little differently. Most sanctioning bodies also judge installation, the amount it weighs into your score is dependent on the class you are competing in.
4. What's the difference?
Pretty self explanatory - one measures how loud, one measures how clear.
5. Where do I find shows?
Most of the national and international competition organizations have regional strongholds, with other shows scattered about the country. The following Web sites will take you to the organizations listings:
dBDrag racing. SPL only. Strongest in Cali, Missouri, Southeast (Fla.). Many shows around the country.
IASCA - strongest on east coast/south east. Has both SPL and SQ competition.
MECA - strongest in Appalacians, shows in southeast, midwest
SLAP - Sound Looks and Performance. Offers not just SPL and SQ, but also a car-show component to competition. Strongest in eastern and midwest
USACi - strongest in midwest. Also has SPL/SQ/car show.
I am sure there are some topics that I have missed. Please feel free to add questions/answers.

how exactly do the classes work. for instance, i have 2 12 inch mtx thunder 9500 and a 1501d in a 2 door blazer. Will i be competing against others that have abou the same power and only 2 12s? how does all of that work? sorry if this is a repetative answer.
