Since many topics are asked ad nauseum, I am posting this to eliminate a few repitive questions.
1. Should I compete?
Yes. Why not? While it's great to come out of the box as a beginner and win like mad, it doesn't happen often. One thing about competitions - it makes you better and you learn more about what you're doing. It's a gathering of like-minded people who share your hobby and interests. In addition to the education factor of learning about new and better ways to do things, you'll make a lot of friends/meet a lot of people.
2. What is SPL?
SPL is abbreviated for Sound Pressure Level - the test of "loudness". SPL is measured in deciBels (dBs).
3. What is SQ?
SQ is abbreviated for sound quality. It is subjectively judged by trained officials from the show's sanctioning body. The judges will use the same media (cd) and track in your vehicle as every other vehicle in the competition. The judging is based on how well and accurately the sound is reproduced. Most judging CDs have stage maps and information that will tell you what you should be hearing, coming from where. In most sanctioning bodies, there is an SPL component to the SQ judging. Each organization does it a little differently. Most sanctioning bodies also judge installation, the amount it weighs into your score is dependent on the class you are competing in.
4. What's the difference?
Pretty self explanatory - one measures how loud, one measures how clear.
5. Where do I find shows?
Most of the national and international competition organizations have regional strongholds, with other shows scattered about the country. The following Web sites will take you to the organizations listings:
dBDrag racing. SPL only. Strongest in Cali, Missouri, Southeast (Fla.). Many shows around the country.
IASCA - strongest on east coast/south east. Has both SPL and SQ competition.
MECA - strongest in Appalacians, shows in southeast, midwest
SLAP - Sound Looks and Performance. Offers not just SPL and SQ, but also a car-show component to competition. Strongest in eastern and midwest
USACi - strongest in midwest. Also has SPL/SQ/car show.
I am sure there are some topics that I have missed. Please feel free to add questions/answers.

how exactly do the classes work. for instance, i have 2 12 inch mtx thunder 9500 and a 1501d in a 2 door blazer. Will i be competing against others that have abou the same power and only 2 12s? how does all of that work? sorry if this is a repetative answer.

a speaker is a item that produces sound, it works by vibration and moving air, the more air it moves it louder it will be. the speaker is basicly a piston that moves the air out of the enclosure, in theroey the bigger the sub and box the louder it will go.

Is this supposed to be a serious answer?
If yes, you need to reread the above post a few times until you realize its a joke.
If no, your post needs some cues that it is indeed a joke.

What are you talking about? SQ or SPL?
In SQ it would make zero sense for each competitor to pick a different song to get judged by. There would be no standard.
In SPL, most SPL organizations allow you to use test tones--which will always be louder than any song. Then the ones that use music, do allow you to pick what song you can use--except in general it can not have explicit lyrics.

i totally understand the SQ arena. but thanks for slearin up the spl. i wasnt completely sure, but thats what my guess woulda been. i dont rly like the thought of using test tones though. yea, its clean and loud and such, but audio systems should be installed to listen to, not make noise. my personal view there. btw, has anyone ever said ohmage before? not sure if its a word, but if its not, im claiming it.

The Spl arena has a format know as Bass race where you pick your own music.Again turn to Termpro for guidlines on what it consists of but pretty much anything but test tones.

Alright well we know that they have had comps here, but do they still have them? I've been looking for a long time and haven't been able to find any.
I know that they don't happen for a while but i've looked everywhere and can't find a 2008 schedule anywhere.
I also go to that dragstrip and if there are competitions there i would be going there all the time. alright well if you have any info for me that would be great.
thanks for the information.
