Researching multiple threads on here I have picked up some knowledge but I am trying to get more personnel advice from cats on here w/ a similiar experience. I have a 05 Navigator and I built a sealed enclosure for 2 12" Diamond Audio D6's to fit behind my third row. The sound inside is definately nice my problem is when the volume goes over 15 the rear hatch rattles horribly. The subs sit about 2"-3" away from the rear panel. Experimenting last night i turned the box to face up and it wasn't that bad... glass rattled but it wasn't like metal paneling bad. Due to the wedge back design i cant leave it like that so my next step is to sound deaden (looking into SS Pro or Xtreme Dynamat) the rear hatch. To the meat of my question..... Due to the subs being so close to the rear panel is the cost of laying 2-3 layers of sound deadener even going to make it worth wild? I dont have the budget to totally erraticate all vibration and make a deadly silent truck, but I would like to put it up and not sound like the rear hatch is about to get blown apart. Any help would be great seeing that this project is on my asap list.

i had a buddy with a jeep cherokee and his rattle was actually the latch assembly attached to the rear handle. It was right where everything hinged, and I couldn't see a way to make that part of it not rattle. Hopefully this isn't the case, with you, but what I'd do first is take all the panels off and then see if you still have rattles, and start trying to isolate exactly what's shaking, then go from there. A little deadener/foam padding/etc goes a long way when put in the right spot. And I'd HIGHLY suggest you go with Second Skin's Damplifier Pro. That stuff is nothing short of amazing. Look at their overkill foam too.

i agree that some Damplifier Pro is the way to go. But i also think you want to add a layer of MDF to the rear hatch, where your subs are firing. That added mass, on top of a couple layers of deadener, should help.

I use weatherstripping sponge-rubber closed cell foam to help alleviate rattles and buzzes. putting some extra foam where the hatch contacts the vehicle may add some resistance to the latch contact, helping the cause.

rattling latches are a common problem. cars that have a pull-down latch don't seem to suffer the same issue.

@ keep_hope_alive...
interesting... i never heard of using a piece of mdf to take the brunt of the hit. giving the limited space i already have would a surface so close change my sound... is there a general distance subs should be from any type barrier?

@ toplevel23...
i will admit my two choices where formulated after intense reading through this forum via others referrals. originally products like fatmat where catching my interest due to the amount you can get for a fairly cheap price. Raammat was also a choice. I guess i feel my rattle was so intense that a thicker deadener would just work for me.

1. i bought and used raammat before trying second skin. i've tried both. ss sticks better, isn't as gooey, and has a thicker aluminum layer, which helps deaden it. my doors literally sound like concrete on my accord. they never sounded like that in my civic with the raamat. i do a knock test with people comparing the undeadened rear doors with the front. the reaction is the same every time.

2. the mods on the forum that reccomend IA Flatlynes also run those. That'd be andy, me, scott patterson, robert petty, steve cook (not a mod). so you're wrong there as well.

I think I've covered my bases. It seems pretty clear who here is and isn't credible.

I appreciate the input. I might be going w/ the xtreme dynamat bulk... price was the main decision breaker. I found sets in the $130 range including shipping. Heres a few picks of the set up. I'm currently brainstorming a amp rack so it doesn't stay on the box. The Hifonics zxi 1308 amp came w/ the subs but it actually powers it well. I will be insearch for a new 2 channel amp that can push the D6's better, the illuminating lights are killing me.

^^^ the picture from above showing how close the sub is to the panel. The panel bulges a bit at the top so theres actually a bit more space infront of the sub. Im considering building another enclosure to face up along w/ the deadener and hoping it alleviates the s*&%$y rattle from the outside. Still open to more ideas and as soon as the deadener arrives i'll update also i will be attempting the mdf against the panel idea.

facing the subs up should still perform well and will definitely reduce rattles.

Dynamat Extreme Bulk Pack is $130 for 36 sq. ft. (random online)

Damplifier Pro is $160 for 36 sq. ft. + shipping (from MFR)

Damplifier is $100 for 40 sq. ft. + shipping (from MFR)

either way, you're getting good stuff.

I HIGHLY suggest SecondSkin products. That is what I use in my car and I absolutely love them.

How did I miss this thread?!?

Thanks to all for the Second SKin Suggesstions!

When comparing Second SKin to Dymamat, it is important to comare the right Product.
Most people want to compare Dynamat extreme to Damplifier Pro, but in reality, Damplifier is the right product that should be compared to Dynamat Extreme

Here is how it works out

Dynamat Extreme
4 mil foil
1.6 mm thick
Butyl rubber
.45 lbs per sq ft.

Damplifier
4 mil foil
1.5 mm thick
Butyl rubber (with higher rubber content and less filler)
.45 lbs per sq ft.

Damplifier Pro
6.5 mil foil
2 mm thick
Butyl rubber (with higher rubber content and less filler)
.65 lbs per sq ft.

As you can see Damplifier Pro is a far superior vibration damper.
Damplifier is designed to go head to head with Dynamat Extreme, Hushmat and Stinger road kill.
Damplifier Pro is desinged to be the best in its class.

Hope that helps!
