is there any way to install a small 12V battery to keep power to the headunit when the car battery is disconnected?

im sick of losing all of my headunit (alpine CDA-9855) settings every time my battery is disconnected (why the battery is disconnected often enough to annoy me is not important).

I am not aware of anything that can help however I would check the connections at the battery and make sure everything is properly connected.

no, everything is connected properly. just it would be convenient to be able to disconnect my battery (say, to work on my engine safely) and not lose all the settings on the headunit.

Oh I understand now. The only thing that comes to mind is that Autozone has a tool that when they are replacing a battery that they hook a device thru the OBDII port that keeps all of your settings but I do not know if it is something that you can buy over the counter. But it doesn't hurt go in and ask. If that doesn't work, what does everybody think about installing a cap? I have never heard of that being done for this particular application before but would it be a option?

the issue you have is that any second battery would also power the car, so disconnecting just one is not going to help you... unless it's diode isolated from the car.

if you buy a diode-based battery isolator, and a second battery, you would solve your problem.

a cap would also have to be diode isolated. how long it would last would depend on the current draw of the HU and the size of the cap.
