Having been in and out of the hospital over the past 4-5 years I've been out of the game. Now disabled I'm wanting to get back into my old hobby. However, in that time much has changed. My old system was an 8 channel set up using the old Sony Mobile ES system. I still have this unit and would very much like to use it in my new system. In searching for amps it seems many of the old brands have gone down hill or out of biz.
I'm looking for a very high end set of amps, along the lines of McIntosh, Audison so forth. The amps need to be very efficient because I cannot upgrade the alternator (87Porsche911) and space is a premium. So in one for or another I am looking for some high end, great SQ, low current draw. Either a 6chan and a 2, or 2 4chan with one of the two being stronger than the other for my 8"midbass and sub. Looking for suggestions.
Also, if any of you have ever run wires in the doors of one of these cars how did you do it? Its not your typical easy pull wires in the factory grommet type deal. I major PIA, worse if one has 3 sets to run in each door..
Looking for some good advice, I know I haven't been here in years or posted but hope to be able to start an install thread soon.
Cheers, Scott

if you're planning on using the door for all three speakers, i suggest using a closed back mid, or a dome mid. that way you don't have issues with the mid and midbass sharing airspace. Morel and Dynaudio have a nice 3-way set with dome mids.
getting through the factory grommets can be a PITA. picks of your doors and the factory grommet?

THANKS!!
Going to try and discribe this best I can without pics and try and post some soon (very busy painting race motorcycles, only time i have for the net is like today damn near 2am.)
The doors of a 911 have a pocket under the arm rest and an open map pocket where the factory mid resides. I am going to take a mold of the bottom part of the door pockets. When I take out the factory speaker part of my MbQuart 8's basket will sit in that hole. I will glass the back of baffle (mdf)for the 8 to sit in so that is has some what of an enclosure. So it will be isolated from the 4. All of this is contingent on if I can get two more wires in the doors. The door has 3 grommets each less than the size of a dime. A single wire runs in each with its loom, one for the speaker, door locks, pwr window. This will give you an idea how much of a PIA this is.
My only alternative is to do the 8 by itself and try and make kicks for the 4 and tweet. This is also a challenge because of how little room the kicks have AND the duct work runs behind them (again I will try and get pics). These cars are true sports cars in the purest form (not bragging)Porsche never meant for such things to be done. This is the case with most cars but more so with this one. The only local audio shop that I trust (and that has good insurance, also that I worked at before I went into the service 12 years ago) gave me a price of 200 BUCKS each door just to run the wires. OUCH!
AS FOR AMPS which do you think offers the best SQ with the least amount of current draw? I wish I could get my hands on some BLADE SE amps from back in the day. I had 5 of them YEARS ago and kick myself in the ass for ever selling them. I have not found an amp to this date that sounded as warm and musical as they did. I am just not up on all the current products. ANY IDEA'S??
THANKS AGAIN, and sorry this post ended up so long. Blame it on time of day/night/morn and my meds:::)

newer amps will be more efficient than older amps. Class T and Class G boost efficiency while keeping power high.
JL Audio and Alpine have newer amps with high efficiency and small footprints and regulated output at any impedance. I would use JL Audio amps without hesitation.

HEY thanks for posting the pics of the doors. Those in a way tell the story. I was unable to get my lens to work with me in such a tight space. I'll go to a camera store tomorrow and buy a micro lens so that I can post some pics. Gives me an excuse to buy some new gear:)
In nearly every case of audio in these cars you will see at best a component set. They will use the factory wire and just put the crossover in the door or armrest pocket. I took the air duct covers off and I may have found a solution I'm just unsure how it may sound. If you look in the picture of the white car look in the footwell in front of the mid-driver. Its rather large and bulky on the pass side and quite a bit smaller on the drivers side. Now where those panels round over I may be able to cut the corner out and make a teardrop baffle. If I do I'm kinda at a loss if I want to recarpet or paint match it to the car. I'm about split 50/50 leaning to the carpet, you know it hides:) If I do I will likely put the mid on the bottom and tweet high up in the panel to try and take that directional factor out of the picture. Also, this Sony ES has some of the most powerful time- alignment ever put in car audio gear. I really wish someone near had an F1 that I could sample. Granted I already have these pieces they are nearly 20 years old now, surely the F1 has to be an improvement?
As for the amps, like I said I know nothing about the new stuff. The shop I used to work at years ago sells both Alpine and JL. I was very impressed by the size of both digital. Even the midgrade stuff is much smaller than my A/D/S amps I have. The JL is appealing I would really like to her them before I buy, just sound rooms at these shops are nothing more than a wall with holes cut in them. They don't have any demo cars. My point is, if they don't sound as good or better than my A/D/S gear its just throwing away money.
HOW ABOUT SOUND DEADING, where is a good play to buy online. I'm not going to pay shop prices. Like I said before these cars are strictly sports cars, no efforts were made to make them quiet. Its just added weight in the eyes of the hardcore crowd. This car is louder than any car you have ridden in. Engine noise, wind noise mostly from the targa top, they are just DAMN LOUD! The back wall that the engine sits in I would like to really put some good stuff then even some of that coated foam stuff. The doors will need it and also the floors. It is a unibody design car with floor pans which also have zero sound material. So whats a good brand and type that doesn't freaking cost a stupid amount of money?
I'm really getting siked about doing this now that I have started posting. NOW, if all my freaking customers would stop having accidents at the races I could have time for my own projects. I may just tell my next two jobs that I am going to take a couple of weeks to do my own [censored].:)

SecondSkin Audio makes GREAT sound deadening products. They have deadener to fit all budgets (Damplifier Lite, Damplifier and Damplifier Pro). They also have many other products like Luxury Liner and Overkill which are awesome products as well.
To see if the amps sounds as good or better than the A/D/S amps you would need to go to a local dealer and see. I am certain you couldn't have that problem with the Genesis Series 3 amps, ARC SE, McIntosh or Zapco. Those amps are GREAT amps, a little pricey but if you have the money deffenitly worth it.

Thanks guys, I will check out SecondSkin.
We do have a local dealer for JL but like I said the sound rooms are nothing more than a wall with some radio's and speakers on them. What I really need is to hear them in a car, I may call that shop and see if they have done a comp system with those amps and try and schedule a day/time to hear it; give the guy/gal a 6pack for his time.
I know ZAPCO and McIntosh has always made really good gear. I just don't know anything at all about Genesis or ARC. I did read about the ARC stuff but per specs they draw an ass load of power, pretty much the whole product line. I am almost to the point now where that is going to be a MAJOR factor in my decision process because the expense of an alternator.
I'm sure the F1 stuff is killer, its just a damn shame it took anyone 20 years to come up with a better system than the ES stuff. Pioneer ODR stuff came close but was still far off. Hell you can hardly find any info on the Sony stuff these days and most of the people at Sony repair have never even heard of it
PICS will be added tomorrow.
