They make very very nice speakers, some of the best out there. However, they have a really confusing model lineup. They try to cater to every user out there and every possible install option I guess, but it makes for so many models it's hard for the consumer to know what they need. They also like to change models around and revive old names.
The CL-61a for example that you're considering has changed about 3 times now since it was originally released. The current version of it is CDT's lowest entre level model and really isn't anything special. In line with most entrysets with a bit more power handling and a smooth tweeter. It still has a great reputation as a few years back the CL-61a was the model that really put CDT on the map. You should be able to hunt down the CL-62 for $30-$60 more and is a much nicer set and is basically what the old CL-61a set was.
What CDT is most known for though is their HD and Eurosport lines, they just released a new 1.9" deep driver with 7mm of xmax and SQ that rivals the best of the best. I've heard of it and it's really really impressive, midbass is huge and it's only 1.9" deep. They're pretty pricey though... it is after all a top of the line model. http://www.cdtaudio.com/es6im.htm

there are a lot of good speaker brands out there. listen to as many as you can.
i'm not of the opinion they are one of the "best" brands, though they certainly have a following.
i'd pick up an entry level Morel or Hybrid Audio comp set if it was my decision.

HAT has proven itself as a brand...at least in the competition lanes...over the last four to five years has it not?

winning world championships = great speakers. hard to debate that.
granted, it takes a lot more than good speakers, install is still >80%. but without great speakers it's an uphill battle.

Install is essential. We know S.B. preaches careful planning and preparation before actual install.
Ultimately it is whatever sounds best to the end user.

exactly. notice that competitors don't run the same stuff, yet all do well. proof that install is more important than what you use and personal preference dictates equipment selection.

so the preperation and execution of the install is more important than the actual equip.? ive given myself until mid febuary to get my sq and spl setup completed, although the sq part is goin to be a work in progress as this will be my first yr competing and i want to make it right as well as look good. ive actually narrowed my choices down to CDT, HERTZ, AND HYBRID. ive talked to some guys that compete and they say i really cant go wrong with one of 'em i guess itll be whatever the check book will allow.
