I have a crew cab chevy silverado. I just finished sound deadening the doors and panel. I see that someone is selling door pods that go in place of the factory grill on the door panel. I'd like to do this but am wondering if I will have problems with sound or whatever with mounting them to the 1/8" ABS plastic? They are relatively small so I can't imagine them "flexing" much but let me know what you think. Also if I do this I have a hole going through the door where the factory speaker sat. Does this need to remain open or should it be closed or will it matter? I am guessing it is the same for those running the fiberglass door panels and mounting speakers to it. What do you do with the door sheetmetal? Did I waste money deadening the doors with mounting the speakers in the panel pods instead of the sheet metal of the door? The pods are from http://www.customspeakerpods.com

i wouldn't mount midbass speakers to plastic. you want a rigid surface, that will not flex. they state they use the same material as the factory door panel. i wouldn't mount a speaker to that. Q-forms have the same problem - thin plastic and a general lack of airspace.

they should be making the mounts out of fiberglass and MDF rings, then figuring out a way to get good airflow to the door cavity. you need the door cavity to act as an enclosure, or free air baffle, depending on the speakers used. most car audio speakers are designed for free-air or infinite baffle installation in doors and the rear deck.

you didn't waste money deadening the doors. you will want to use the opening into the door. make a MDF ring, secure it to the door, and mount the speaker to it. our Team SoundDomain section has installation examples of this. you can angle the driver if you want as well with some fiberglass pods.

The problem I am having is that the hole for the stock speaker is not very deep and will not allow for my hertz midbass drivers to sit in it so I have to space them out. The door metal does not lend itself well to a sold base to mount a speaker to. So what if I just make the panel pod from mdf and fiberglass? Should be good then right?

yes, MDF and FG make the best pod. even just stacked MDF rings that are covered in Vinyl or carpet would work. FG lets you give the pods a nice angle.
