i just bought an '88 mitsubishi van that has a mediocre kenwood KDC-135 head unit and stock speakers... (2) 4" front and (2) 5-1/4" rear, with a little 4" sub (in the little 7"x8" black plastic box (with crazy wiring harness) under the dash. see photo:
for financial reasons, i had planned to keep the head unit and install a TEK 35.2 2-channel amp that i have sitting around, and then replace the stock speakers with some decent ones of the same stock size ((not interested in cutting out or modifying for bigger speakers...if you could see the interior panels, you'd understand)).
i was just going to run all 4 speakers "in parellel" off the amp, and throw the little stock sub in the trash (because it's non-functional with the aftermarket head unit installed).
but it seems a SHAME to waste that space under the dash...i want to add a sub of some kind...(maybe a "powered" sub? or is there a better idea utilizing my current amp setup?)
when i remove the little stock sub box in the photo, the open space is 9-1/4" high x 8" wide x 10" deep (this 10" dimension could be expanded up to 12-1/2" if i wanted to get fancy and do a 'cut out' of the plastic piece under the gear shift).
i could put something in the same position as the stock sub shown in the photo, or i could lay something flat on the floor...
thoughts?

hey man i would just run the 2 channel amp to the sub in the little box if your trashing it take it apart and find the wires coming from the sub and connect it to the amp and run the regular speakers off the radio. and still replace them if you want. so i would say have fun i love to be destructive.
