im trying to learn more about better imaging and soundstaging. i have played around with different locations about my a-pillar for my tweets and on/off-axis as well. i know in the end, whatever sounds best to me is what i should go for... and not just where most people put them.

i have done a good amount of reading on this forum. and time and time again i have seen people say put the tweets a few inches (give or take) above the highest point on your dash.

why is that? wouldnt that lower the "midpoint" of where the sound seems to be coming from? why not put the tweets almost to the headliner?

i drew this terrible picture to show what i mean:

someone prove me wrong. i want to learn.

you do want the tweeters lower on the dash, as low as you can without the dash itself interfering. the hump for the instrument cluster is in the way. you want the sound stage to be laid out across the hood of the car, extending past the side mirrors (ideally). if you move the tweeters up too high on the apillar two things will happen
1. the sound stage will be raised too high, and experience separation. you'll be able to tell what is coming from above you and what is coming from a below you
2. you want the drivers as far from you as possible. moving them up moves them very close to your head. instead of the singer being on the hood of your car, she'll be yelling in your ear.

don't think of the midpoint between the speakers as being where the sound stage will live. it will usually raise up to the tweeter height. i saved a good thread that goes a bit more in depth on the topic.

An addition to the advice and the link given is another gem from Scott Buwalda. It is in the very least something to consider. Seeing as I'm using his components, I'll be experimenting with placement for hours upon hours I'm sure.

This link dives into the shallow end of crossover points, placement, pshyco-acoustics, and axis differential.

http://www.buwaldahybrids.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=3328

Also know that you have options to work a "quasi-active" system instead of relying on the passive crossovers from the factory.

...This is actually what I'll be doing on my three way set with only one four channel amplifier (unless the potential of two channels of my 125 x 4 can't push the mid-bass enough). There's more to that set of variables...

Yes both threads were very informative. I realize that technology has improved leaps and bounds since I competed(early '90's, late '80's) when the first DSP's came out they were horrible. In the 89 GrandPrix we put the BostonPro 5.25" and tweeters in the kicks. We used expanding foam to help stop back wave distortion. I know that may sound insane but the before and after effects were incredible and yes it was very messy. There just wasn't anything on the market that could help with what we wanted to accomplish. The soundstage and imaging was incredible. The stage was eye-level and beyond the windshield of the car. The imaging was near perfect. I think I consistently scored in the high 30's of the IASCA SQ tests. Didn't do well with SPL side of it, I just didn't have enough. I wished I had kept more information and pics but that is what happens when you get married, divorced and remarried. Anyway the system that I will be building will be built around the DRZ9255 it seems to have everything that I am looking for in a head unit, 4volt preamp, no onboard amp, time alignment and other features. I just have to find one, it always seems I'm a day late and a dollar short!!! BTW this is going to sound silly but I have a question: How do you guys get the smiley faces(other graphics) in your posts? I can't figure that out???

instead of just posting in the box on the bottom - click the "Reply" link. it will bring up a different window that lets you select from a large list of smileys.

or just type them out \:\)

Hey Skool,

Go over and visit the guys at http://www.buwaldahybrids.com. You just may find a 9255 over there. I can't promise anything, but if there's any place with "tuner-heads" (myself included) this is definately it.
