ok first here is what i have now
Alpine CDA-9835 (27wrmsx4) great sounding deck just show its age JL TR 6.5" Components front JL TR 6.5" Coaxials rear Alpine 12" Type R ported (new style type r) 600wrms Alpine Amp
Looking to start with upgrading subs and headunit and interior speakers down the road. Looking to improve both SQ and SPL of the subs. The 2 setups i was considering were.
2x Alpine Type X 10" in a sealed box with a 2000wrms alpine amp 2x JL 10W7 in a sealed box with a JL 1000wrms amp
The JL's are rated for 500wrms each so that amp is perfect, the Alpines are rated for 1000wrms each so the 2000wrms amp is good for them but here is the issue i see. the JL setup is def more money BUT the 2000wrms that the alpine amp draws is gonna be a huge drain on my electrical system. Will have to upgrade the alternator battery and do 0 guage wire (pain in the @ss to run and work with) where as my factory 140a alternator and 4 guage wire will be enough for the 1000w jl amp. (would still upgrade battery, the battery my car takes is huuuge)
As for the headunit i was thinking something along the lines of the Alpine IVA-W505/P1 as i want something with NAV. I have a nice double din opening so the big touchscreen would be nice.
I will have to upgrade to an amp for the interior speakers later as it seems im gonna drop in wrms from the 27 that my current deck has to about 18 with the new one (amp will be cleaner anyways) and i may upgrade the interior speakers but im not sure on that yet.
Thoughts?

if you want to improve SQ you need to start with an amp for the speakers. that is #1. new or used, get a good 4 channel amp. you will be very happy with what a good amp can do for SQ. head units suck for powering speakers at mid-high volumes.
#2 is how those speakers are installed. buy sound deadening (Second Skin) and deaden/seal up the locations. (assuming this isn't already done).
Then, upgrade the sub. The 9835 is a nice head unit with good flexibility for time alignment and crossover functions. The W505 requires an external processor to keep time alignment and eq and crossover.
upgrading the head unit and subs will not improve overall SQ unless the other 98% of what you hear is already great.
i do agree the Type-R isn't a SQ sub, i own one and have the same complaint. for SPL with SQ look no further than Incriminator Audio Flatlyne. W7's are nice subs too.
I like and trust JL Audio amps more than Alpine amps. and the JL setup will be louder than the Alpine setup.

i guess i could do the new headunit and 4 channel amp first and then subs later. I will have to run new wire for the subs as my current amp is running on 8 guage. So ill have to run 4 guage for the JL amp, i suppose i could leave the 8 guage run for the 4 channel amp though.
The car has been pretty extensivly dynamatted. My 9835 is starting to have trouble reading discs, and that aside i want NAV anyways and i like the big screen on the Alpine unit. For the W505, are you saying it doesnt have any crossover settings or highpass/lowpass filters built in?
Ive owned a JL 500/1 and a W7 10" before and i liked it but it wasnt quite loud enough. You really think the W7 setup would be louder then the Type X's even though they would have 2x the power?

as far as i know, the W505 just has standard bass/treble controls. if you want processing, crossovers, T/A, you buy the Imprint H100 unit or the PXA-H701 processor.
check out this review of the W505 http://forum.sounddomain.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/1457893/page/1#Post1457893
i don't think the Alpine amp is as good as the JL amp, regardless of ratings. more power is nice, but Alpine has been slipping with their amps as of late. it's impossible to say which will be louder, there are too many variables. i just think JL has more reliability.
