I blew up my JLw6 12 awhile back and bought an eclipse sw9122 to replace it. I picked up a 500/1v1 from a guy.
I'm thinking of trying to run the eclipse on the 500/1, but i'm not sure if it will work: I think the rms on the sub is 750, while the 500/1 is supposed to be able to pump out 500 stable no matter the load if understand correctly. So I can run it at 4 ohms, but I still won't be coming close to the wattage the sub will want and risk underpowering the sub, which I understand is worse than overpowering it.
My question is, should I sell the eclipse and see about having the W6 repaired and slap that on my new slash series?

the 500/1 will power that sub just fine. it won't be at it's optimum, but it won't hurt it. Underpowering will NEVER hurt your sub. if it did, then everytime you turned the volume down you'd have to worry.
the issue that comes up when people talk of damaging speakers when "underpowering" is a little misleading. for example, what happens is someone puts an amp only capable of 200RMS on a sub that needs 600RMS to operate optimally. well, with only 200RMS on tap, the person is (almost always) dissatisfied with the output.
what do they do? they start turning up the gain, bass boost and sub level on the HU until the signal is completely clipped and now you have a problem with the subs thermal power handling.
basically, as long as you use common sense, you will not hurt that sub with that amp.

Okay, thanks. I was worried about blowing that sub up and possibly ruining the amp, but I'll try it out and see how it sounds. I still may go with a sub that requires less power. I have that sub wired at 4 ohms right now (power going to one coil, then wire from first coil to the second). I'll check it out and see how it sounds.
