I have an older sony amp that goes in protect when i put it on the low pass filter. when i turn the filter off or on high pass it works fine. can anyone tell me how to fix this?

oohh, sounds like the unit itself is bad. old amps tend to fail, Sony is no exception.

most likely, it's less than $5 in parts. good luck finding someone to actually do the work though.

in the meantime, you can use a passive sub crossover.

you can leave the amp on high pass so it works. then install a low pass filter between the amp and sub.

you didn't say what exact model amp and what model sub(s). how is it wired and what is the impedance?

something like the link above is a passive low pass filter - 100Hz low pass for a 4 ohm load.

the model is Sony Xplod XM 2165GTX silver with a red x. but how would that filter work with the amp? is it safe

The filter that KHA suggested is a passive low-pass filter. The filter is place between the sub and amp.

You can also try this.

You insert these at the amp RCA inputs. They provide a low pass crossover BEFORE the amp, much more efficient.
