ive done some research and asking questions, and ive seen that some competitors run multiple strands of power wire. is this really neccessary, if so what is considered "too much" or "over-doing-it"? and how exactly is it done, well done correctly and benefical? thanks for the input

more copper = more current carrying capacity
unless you're competing, i wouldn't worry about it.
look up the wire guage chart to see what's the correct gauge for your system.

more importantly, more copper = lower voltage drop.
if you are going to pull more current than the wire is rated for you need to upgrade to larger wire or multiple runs.
1/0 is rated between 250-300A. if you need more than that, you need another run.
MECA and IASCA have tables that define voltage drop requirements by dictating wire AWG based on current and distance.

the amps that ive use didnt pull more than 200a, so i guess i was in good shape using just 1 run of 0. i did compete in 2008 and did fairly decent, but took this year off to handle some other stuff. plan on gettin back into it in 2010, just wanna make sure i get all my electrcal stuff taken care of. thanks guys for the input.

well, if you were near 200A then you may need two runs just for voltage drop (if you're power wire is longer than say, 10 feet).

those rf amps pulled right at 200a and im looking to get the aq3500 (audio q). the spec sheet says it pulls 350 if my memory is rite. im also thinking of changing to 16v batteries. i drive an explorer so itll be longer than 10ft. should i run strands off my battery under the hood to a fuse block and one off the block to the amp, or am i way off?

for >250A you need two runs of 1/0 wire. both separately fused at 250A under the hood at the battery. route them safely - some will use liquid tight flexible metal conduit under the car to protect the wire. make sure you use proper grommets when passing through metal. if the amp can indeed pull that much power it will have two 1/0 wire connections.
your grounds are very important. you may need to route two 1/0 grounds to the battery also.
you'll want to make sure you have a substantial battery up front. a battery bank in the back might be required also, which means you'll just wire the amps to teh battery bank in teh back, and wire the rear batteries to teh front battery/alt.

Basic Car Audio Electronics Website
Scroll to "#16 Wire" in the right column. There's a diagram about a quarter of the page down.

so 2 runs of power and ground. will using a 16v batt make a difference. (not quite sure if thats the route i will go, but its an option)
