I have two sets of Alpine SPX177r in my truck that are getting tired. The tweeters are fine, just the 6.5 mids are distorting at levels that they used to handle, and at least one surround has started to crack. I am not looking to replace the x-over's or tweeters, but what would be a good mid to replace them with? Preferably something slightly stronger than the Alpine mid. The openings are currently at 6.5", I could probably go 6.75" in the front and 8" in the rear if necessary.

Dynaudio makes great midbass/midrange speakers.

i used to have a set of the SPX-177R. sold them with very little use. bummer they aren't holding up. a good speaker should last for a couple decades.

I was about to get the Dynaudio M160 to try in the front, but was turned off by the long break in period. I'm just not that patient. Ended up ordering the CDT ES-06 instead. Hopefully I can make them work with the Alpine X-over and tweeters as I really don't want to change either of those due to the holes they would leave on display.

I like the Alpine gear, but am not having great luck with my current setup. One of the X-over's came with a solder pad that had broken loose, and one of my PDX 1.1000 is on my bench pending some FET's that are on back order. On my previous vehicle, the surround came unglued from the 10" type X sub after about a year of use in a sealed enclosure.

the Dynaudio would have sounded better than the CDT, regardless of break-in. break-in just means they sound even better after a while.

Humm... The post that I read said that the Dynaudio's didn't sound that great until about 200hrs of use. Are the Dynaudio's that significantly better? I suppose I could commit the 4 CDT's to the rear for fill and get a set of Dynaudio's for the front MR. Or perhaps the Alpine xovers would kill off any benefit, just a LPF on the MR with slight adjustments in cutoff frequency.

Well, the CDT's are out for delivery, so I will post back with my findings soon.

This is going to take a bit longer than expected. The CDT ES-06 has a slightly larger diameter than the Alpines. I widened the holes in the front, but the adapters no longer fit so temporarily the excess holes from the factory ovals are covered with tape. Will try to make some new adapters this weekend and start tweaking the EQ/xover's.
