Hey everyone, the last time I posted anything here was the good ol' days when sounddomain had a killer store for audio equipment. Anyways, my older pioneer premier 860 headunit broke and I need to replace it ASAP. I just bought a new pioneer DEH-p4100UB unit and now I am looking to replace it with the other.
After I figure out how the hell to get the old unit out, will it be as easy as unplugging everything from the back of the old unit and plugging them back into the new HU into the same slots? My subwoofer amp blew last month so I don't think I will plug the sub cable into it. Do I unplug the car battery first?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, unhook the battery first for safety reason of old wiring connections. always unhook the battery when moving anything electrical related in your car.

If its a Pioneer HU the harness for it has not changed in a long time. so it will plug in, with out rewiring.

Whats wrong with the DEH-p4100UB?

Sorry I got type twisted there. I meant that I am replacing my old premier unit with the brand spanking new 4100UB. Are these HU's bolted down? If yes that probably means I have remove the front panel on the car right?

THanks for the quick reply mate

after you disconnect power, you need to remove the factory trim around the HU. that will expose the mounting brackets. if there is a rear radio strap, you will have to remove the mount in order to access it.

is there a black plastic mounting kit there already?

if you can remove panels to access the rear of the head unit, you may be able to just slide the old radio out of the sleeve and insert the new radio. this will depend if the old radio sleeve is the same as the new radio sleeve.

i forget if Pioneer has the same radio removal tools. they slide into the sides between the cd player and the cage (you must remove the plastic trim ring first). then you slide each removal tool in the middle of the sides and you can unhook the head unit from the cage.

then it just slides out.

What an f'ing disaster. The input plug in the back has been changed within the last few years because it does not match up. Now I need to rewire everything. To make it worse, the Yellow wire has a fuse holder and something else on it, and the red and orange wires have fuse resistors on them. Are these needed on my new headunit? I noticed that the new one has a 10v fuse next to the plug connection on the back. Does this mean that the other fuses are not needed. Someone please help!

The old unit probably had a choke on the power wire (the black box). You don't need to keep it for the new unit.

The new unit has a chassis mounted fuse so no, you don't need the inline fuses.

just cut everything off of the adapter harness and connect color to color with the new pioneer harness. Anything that was with the old Pioneer harness should be removed.

having to replace the wire harness is not a disaster. that is just the way it is when you replace a head unit. the wire colors are the same. \:\)

the premier units use a different harness. it's still a 16pin harness, but the shape of the plug is slightly different.
