Check to see if the tinsel wire separated on the sub. Sometimes visually looking at the sub might not work so it is better to run a continuity test on the speaker with a multimeter to if you have resistance. No noise indicates an open circuit.
What model subs do you have and are they dual voice coil? What ohms?

Thanks for the reply I will do that first thing tomorrow. I know this might be a broad, unanswerable question here but I'll shoot just so I know for sure. If I had blown the speakers, they should still technically work right? I blew my Kicker and it sounded like crap, but sound still came from it. 2nd possibly dumb question. Can an amp that has problems totally kill speakers? I got the Polks for a great deal ($100) and I tested them with his amp and they worked beautifully. But I don't want to hook them up *if* my amp can do anything to them.

Performance Teknique ICBM-5712 - those are the subs I have, might be a newer model here, but they look identical. The html link has the exact specs. I don't care much about them, I just want to find out if hooking up the Polks to this amp can lead to any problems.

What amp did you use for the subs? Are both not working or just one? How were they wired?

The amp is a Performance Teknique 772. Both subs aren't working, but I'm not 100% when my system was up both were actually working, I only had the stereo working going for about 30 minutes, after that I had a battery drain so my system has been disconnected since. Doing the Big 3 this weekend. I don't remember 100% but when I took the subs out of the box, I think they were wired positive to positive and negative to negative, and the wire ran to the cup on the back of the box - not sure what you call that thing, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

Where you running in bridged mode or one sub per channel? That thing is called a speaker terminal cup.

Was running one sub per channel, the subs aren't bridged. The Polks though are bridged, just one terminal cup on the side of the box. I didn't wire the subs to the box, when I picked it up I just assumed since it had already been used that everything was connected right. But, I don't know enough about amps to know if I can mess up the new ones. That's if there is something wrong with the amp. I'm not sure how to test it. Even without a deep understanding, the fuses in the amp should blow if there's an electrical problem with my system right? Which would mean the new subs should be fine, so long as I hook up the wiring right?
I'm trying to learn here so I have enough knowledge to know what and what not to do. Thanks for your help.
I might get brave and hook up the Polks tomorrow, unless you respond back otherwise that is lol.

Try connecting the Polk to one of the channels on the amp. Verify to see id their is any sound. If there is no sound then you might have bad output circuit which mean you need to have it repaired or replace with a new amp.
The fuses on the are their to protect the amp from shorting and in which case you do not.

Ok, I'll try that after I do my Big 3 upgrade today. Not to sound like a broken record, but is it possible at all for me to damage the Polks just by hooking the amp up to them? My logic says no, but for some reason I'm worried here.

No, it won't hurt to hook them up, it will simply reveal if there is another problem or not.
