Has anyone hooked these two devices together via the kenwood cable?
I've sent kenwood support an email asking if it was possible and they answered it was possible using the cable KCA-iP301v. I've hooked up the cable and music plays well but then the music stops playing for no reason about 30 seconds after I restart my head unit -- sometimes. I've also seen the head unit stop playing music and it displays a message "authorization failure"
I've gone onto the following website http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/ipod/
and put in my head unit DDX-812 and iphone 3G(i actually have the 3GS so maybe that's not supported either) and the site says "There is no cable that can be connected."
I wish kenwood had better information about how and whether this stuff works at the very least they don't really seem to know what's going on....

I just bought an Excelon KDC-X993, and had the same problem with my 3GS. When I called, they said that the problem's with the iPhone. What they said happens is:
As soon as the phone syncs with the head unit's Bluetooth, the phone disables the plug (dock) as the audio output - it switches to Bluetooth automatically.
For me, it was doing this when i turned off either the head unit OR the iPhone, and turned it back on. So, what they said to do is:
Once it's synced, go to the iPod function on the phone. It should say, "Accessory attached" or something. At the Bottom of the screen, it will say, "Kenwood XXX-XXXX BT" on the bottom with a lit Bluetooth symbol beside it. Click on the Bluetooth icon, and a popup menu opens. On that menu, select "Dock Connection" and the audio comes back.
They also advised against updating to the latest iPhone software. My impression is that the apple software updates drift the iPhone further and further away from what Kenwood originally designed their hardware to work with.
