Hello,
I'm new here and was hoping somebody can help me out. I have on my boat a Sony head unit pushing 2 6x9 Pioneer and 2 5 1/4. The head unit has a Fosgate amp pushing 1 12" fosgate sub. Everything works fine but when i turn up the volume to about 18 everything shuts off. Any suggestion or help will be appreciated.
thank you.

could possibly be a short, most likely in the speaker wiring to the HU. start troubleshooting by checking resistance in all connections with a dmm.

yep short or low voltage. monitor the voltage when it cuts out. anything below 11.5V and you found your problem.

Thank you for your replies Frank Grimes and Keep hope alive. I'm a complete begginer when it comes to electronics and stereo systems so i'm going to try to use the info you provided. If you have any more details or pictures of what you think i should do please provide.
Thank you.

try disconnecting the sub and see if it still cuts out. if yes then it's in the speaker wiring. if not then it's probably low voltage from the amp.
whenever you add a sub and amp to a boat i recommend you keep a voltmeter visible at all times the system is on. most boat alternators cannot power an aftermarket sound system. so the batteries need to do all of the work, and are not recharged.
do you have shore power? solar panels? how many batteries? what boat/engine?

then you probably have a short. regardless, you should have a volt meter that you monitor.
are the batteries in parallel or on a isolator/switch?

the batteries are on a switch, the kind that has different positions settings like off, 1, 2 or both. I unplugged the sub and the head unit still shuts off. I bought a multimeter and put it to the batteries and they show over 12 volts but i'm not sure how to check for the power to the headunit. I know this might be pretty easy to do but as i mentioned earlier i don't know about electrical stuff. I appreciate your help.

Does the lights on the radio dim when the sound cuts out?

i'm guessing it's one of your speaker wires. if just one strand is shorting out - the head unit will cut out at a certain volume.
go back, and redo every speaker wire connection.
describe how the connections are made now. did you crimp connectors, solder, or just wrap the wires and use electrical tape.
i don't use electrical tape in boat installs. i use heat shrink with adhesive and solder if i have to make a crimp. but lately, i've been using insulated terminal strips for my speaker wire connections since i remove boat components every winter.
