I've been into car audio for over 10 years. I've only cared about 3 brands when it comes to decks, Alpine, Eclipse and Pioneer. I've been out of the game for a while and now I am searching for a new deck. The specs look great and the price are pretty good as well.
The deck that I am looking at is the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD59 for about $179.
-5v preamp
-7 band eq
-HD radio built in(something I've always wanted)
(and the light is not green or red)

Or even this one for $129
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KDA305/JVC-Arsenal-KD-A305.html?tp=5684
-5v preamp
-24-bit digital-to-analog converter

Have JVC stepped up to the game in today's market or am I being fulled by the specs on the paper only.

i've seen a few ipod connection problems in the JVCs....other than that, they pack a good amount of features for what you pay.

Anyone know how there 24-bit DAC compares to others in the market? I noticed that they have it in a $129 deck while most other brand reserve that for their high end decks only.

If it has the 24-bit DAC should it have pretty good/reasonably good sound quality even if they sell for $129?

proof that the actual chip to do the 24-bit DAC isn't expensive - hell, the IC is only a couple bucks. I honestly don't understand why every HU on the market isn't using them.

it's not the DAC alone that provides good sound quality. The difference in price is due to the power supply. Great power supplies are expensive. The JVC has a cheap power supply. Your main concern would be noise. I haven't heard one in a proper setup to report on personal experience. for that price, buy it and find out. if you don't like it you have a loaner head unit.

Interesting I never knew it was like that. I will try the $129 HU from JVC to see how it goes. My alpine 9827 still work great and has great SQ. I just wish I had more options as far as plugging my ipod into it.

I'm waiting until I get back from Iraq before I install the AVX77 in my little Yaris...

I had a test run in the shop owners PT. Even though it isn't a "classical" SQ unit, it was installed properly and placed with some midline amplifiers and midline speakers. IT sounded "so good" that I'm going to put it as a source in my compeition plans. Those 5 Volt outs and the 24 bit D/As are fine with me. The selling point over the classic tuners is the servicablitiy/warranty issues. If this craps, I can go pretty much anywhere and replace it QUICKLY. No dice on the old tuners. This may be the difference between life and death in the SQ lanes...servicability.

Just my thoughts.

I am not expecting the $129 deck to sound as good as a Nakamichi or a Apline F#1. It if sound as good as a mid-range deck from Alpine, eclipse or pioneer then it would be good enough. I don't have top of the line speakers to match this system for the car. I am running my old Diamond Audio S600 or something, its been so long I forgot.

I'll get the deck in about a week or so and I'll report back to see how the SQ goes.
