Im looking for decent HU for an 87 benz 300 and came across the Clarion VZ309.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_020VZ309/Clarion-VZ309.html?tp=5684

It looks good to me as it as the USB input and aux input on front face that im looking for, as well as ipod control and HD ready.

Anyone have any thoughts about it? Seems like it will be pretty decent for a basic system w/amp and DVD screen in backseat. You can get it on Amazon for $250 or so, sounds good to me. Dont know diddly about Clarion stuff though. I wonder how the quality will be, ie how the buttons feel when pressed, how long it will last, ect...

Oh they are pretty nice decks if you can't afford a flip out or double din screen deck, but want video up front (I.E. for backup camera, watch movies when parked, etc...). We have one on display at our shop and I was playing with it the other day. It's pretty cool and easy to use. Only thing I didn't like about it is that the screen is not touch screen, and it can be a little complicated to navigate thru a DVD video's menus if you don't have the remote on hand. Overall it's a pretty solid deck and I like the functions of it. Very good for the price. Hope this info helps.

I would look at JVC as well. Their new stuff is pretty nice. My shop is just starting to carry the brand and I've gotten to play with a few units.

i wonder if it will play mpegs off a usb stick (or ipod), or does it need to be in dvd format via disc? optical media sucks.

theres a review now on crutchfield, i guess thats why they now have an open box price of $269. doesnt sound positive...

they also dropped price $50 on it.

can anyone validate what the review said?

I ordered this because I wanted something that looked nice and had a lot of features. I am very happy with the way it looks and the sharpness of the display. That's why it didn't get only 1 star. But what I am unhappy with is its ability to do anything (different display modes). It has a bright and colorful screen but you cant move where the time is or change the background color, image, or anything. What you see in the pictures is what you are stuck with.
The very first thing that I noticed was how slow it was. I could turn on my truck and start backing out of the driveway before it actually even starts up. I would say it takes a good 30-40sec to start up, and another 15sec to switch sources. Also unused sources such as AUX or Line In always show up, so you have to push the button multiple times to go back an forth between CD and Radio.
Like all Mp3 playing it's hard to navigate. I assumed it was going to have more views of folders and such vs. a GIANT list of all the MP3s (only displays 3 at a time). It will pop or screech when changing tracks. I have a few thousand songs and the random function seems to play the same artists repeatedly.
Worst of all, if you are watching a DVD (great sound and picture) and then cut the power to it, the next time you turn it on it starts back up where it was shut down, but it is stuck in that chapter of the DVD. Meaning it will just loop continuously VERY frustrating.
I cant recommend this unit to anyone.

Thats too bad, what put me off on it was the 2V preamps and no easilly accessible subwoofer level control. I guess I will stick with my old DXZ835MP for now..
