I have a box build out of MDF I plan on coating it with fiberglass (no matt) to seal it and to keep the wood from absorbing all the paint. can someone recommend a primer that will stick to the fiberglass?
Thanks

Any automotive primer will work.

You could also save the PITA work with the fiberglass, and just use a good wood primer like Kilz, and then paint right over it. UGL or DRYLOC works well also for sealing MDF
Course, this doesn't work if you want the "look" of fiberglass but it's a helluva lot easier than sanding fiberglass resin.

OK thanks Yea I am not sure if the fiberglass coating will be worth or not but I already did it so I will just have to move on. Anyway can someone recommend a good filler that i can use to fill scratches and pin holes in the fiberglass? Also i read a tutorial that said to thin out the filler so it is similar to mayonase and just rub the whole box down with it, sounds good to me anyone heard of this method?
What do you thin out filler with?
Thanks

I've always just used the "Bondo" filler. Usually autoparts shops have it, but I think you can get it at lowes & homedepot as well. If you need a lot, it comes in a can, if you only need a little, you can get it in a tube. It's just body filler.
I've never thinned it out, but I think you can use MEK.
for pin holes, heavy build primer might work better.
You can put it all over the box, but if you just have a few little areas that need to be touched up, I would just go that route, and then sand the whole thing down. It all depends on how smooth the FG layers are

I hope your not painting fiberglass because its not going to come out good at all. You need to bondo over the fiberglass then sand making that smooth rough surface then grit it down to around 400 or more then paint it. Ive built fiberglass boxes in the past. Its fun but time consuming. I also recomend cutting the box in half then make a templet for your sub size. Put the templet up on stilts to hold it up. Lay bed sheets or cotton cloth over it, staple it all down , make the curves you want, fiberglass over that keep doing about 4 layers, sand, bondo, paint. Makes your box have curves to it and worth alot more if you ever try reselling it in the future. Its alot of fun, If I can do it you all can lol

Ps or you can fiberglass the curves dont bondo, and stretch black cotton fabric over it. Ive done it before and sold the box for $250 dollars on craigslist.

if your just trying to paint over the wood just block the wood, use a good high build over it, and paint directly on that
