A good friend approached me about a system for his cabin cruiser. His original system was an older Kenwood HU and four Sony Xplod speakers - two in the cabin and two in the rear. There wasn't anything for the driver so he never got to hear music.
We decided to fix that.
System consists of the following - Kenwood KDC 232MR
I designed a custom switching configuration that allows for individual control for each speaker. he can turn them off, power them from the HU, or power them from the amp. the amp has a switch on the remote turn-on to allow him to shut the amp off for low power listening from the HU. the HU wire is fused and the remote is also fused. The amp power comes from a bank of 3 deep cycle batteries (also powering an inverter and A/C unit) and the power wire is fused at the battery.
Driver's speakers were put in a custom enclosure in an empty space under the dash. The enclosure was sealed and a front made from wood and stained to match the boat. the end result is very nice. It has fiberglass fill inside and has excellent bass response.
The wired remote has easy access
The HU is in the normal location inside the cabin. The amp is directly below and the switches on a nearby panel. This kept wiring short. good thing since each speaker switch has six connections (ring terminal on each).
A beauty panel is planned to cover the wiring.
Two speakers are in the cabin to provide inside tunes.

A special shot goes out to Jay (Super Jay) for his help choosing gear.
And thanks to Murph for providing input on gear selection.
How does it sound? Awesome. The Powerbass marine speakers sound better than the Clarion marine coax that i put in my dad's boat (in a similar configuration). They have great bass output - the owner doesn't feel like he needs subs now. And damn does it get loud. He won't have any problem hearing music while cruising at full speed now!
The Powerbass amp is nice. Very clean, nice connections, good adjustments. Just a great amp - you get way more for the money. And it has plenty of power - more than we'll need.
The Kenwood HU and remote are pretty basic. But they perform just fine. We considered several options costing several times more - but a boat is a tough place for a head unit. If this HU fails, it is cheap to replace. The remote is a must - and it has every control needed.
I'm glad I could help. I was surprised by how good those marine speakers sounded when I installed them in a friend's boat.
