listen to current hits with some 80s/90s. not so much rap anymore but my sub will be one 12" RE SL ported so i need something to keep up with it

EDIT: price is max 600 or 700 but if i can stay 300 or 400 that is better

look for Dynaudio, Hybrid Audio, Morel - all three have "entry level" comp sets that are great for the money. but each sounds different so it's up to your tastes.

i listened to a new set of RF components over the weekend, and was actually surprised. the tweeter was very smooth, and they were in essentially an IB install, which is like if you mounted the mid in your door without sealing up the holes, and had surprising low end and clarity and definition. i think you can get them around $400 out the door, or less if you're friends with a shop that carries them.
You really need to go to a decent shop and just listen to some speakers and find out which ones sound the best to you. Don't look at brands or price, just listen. Don't let a tag bias your opinion.
