I'm looking to replace my factory system, since most of my speakers are blown and my factory CD changer no longer works. I want to start with a HU, components, and amp for now, and deal with the bottom end later.

I've auditioned Boston, Premier, and Kicker SS components, in the $300-$600 range (from local shops). I like the sound of the Kicker best so far. The tweeters don't sound too bright, compared to the Premiers, and in the test booth seemed to reach further into the mid-bass than the Bostons.

My local JL dealer is still waiting on his shipment of C2 and C5 series so he can set them up in his test booth (he has the old VR and XR series right now).

Basically, for those who have listened to the Kicker SS as well as the new JL and new Kicker speakers, how do they compare as far as "harshness" of the tweeters, as well as lower end characteristics? Also, are there any other speakers you would recommend in the $600 max range? I would be very reluctant to purchase anything at that price without hearing it first.

I really like JL speakers, every set i've heard was good for the price asked. See if you can find Hybrid Audio or Morel around you.

The new C5s sound really good. JL finally fixed the tweeter issue compared to the XRs, at least to my opinon they did. The tweeters are a lot less harsh on your ears.

If you can, I would also reccomend you check out Focal Audio. You might be able to find a dealer in your area. I personally love the new Focal lineup. They are a little expensive, but Focal doesn't ask questions or give you any grief when you send something back under warantee. Say you accidently smoked a tweeter or something, they'll send you a brand new one right away.

If you don't like harsh tweeters, stay away from their "Access" line, but look at the "K2 Power" line or the "Polyglass" line. (The Access line tweeters are alright, but can get a little harsh at high volumes.)

Hope this info helps.

The new jl c5's are much more laid back in the upper frequency range than the jl xr's, which is good if that is what you are looking for. I still prefer the jl xr's because to me they sound more realistic. I have my xr tweeters set at -4 on the crossover and can see many people finding them to be bright. I mounted my tweeters in the stock location in the a-pillars which is why they sound brighter. If I had mounted them lower I could have probably set them at 0. Focals are very good too, I think I listened to the polyglass line, but I actually thought they were a little brighter than the xr's. The boston pro's are not in the same league in my opinion, no midbass and bright. Unfortunately I have not heard the kicker's.
