I got sick of my big black box in the back of my truck and decided to try building my own fiberglass box. The color is not a perfect match with the interior but it will work until I can find the right paint.
(Any comments are greatly appreciated since I'm still learning about working with fiberglass.)
Here's the build:
The port.

The mdf all put together and ready to be wrapped in fleece.

Fleece put on with many staples.

Layer of just resin.

Layer of fiberglass. (I know its bad...haha bondo will fix that though.)

First layer of bondo.

Putting some primer on.

Finally some paint.

Finished.

good job on a first attempt.
using a lightweight body filler and a high build primer will help make the surface easier to smooth out. make sure to use a sanding block for flat areas, and a flexible pad for the contours.
avoid sanding with just your bare hands and a piece of sandpaper as much as possible. the uneven surface of your hands will lead to the "cottage cheese" finish.
also, it looks like you could have used more MDF on the sides instead of 'glass since that area is flat.
but yeah, great job. with a bit of fine tuning, you can make the box look professional.

if you get the motivation, go back and put 2-3 layers of glass on all of the inside surfaces, stiffen up the whole thing a bit.
very creative work.

If he used MDF on the sides, it would defeat the purpose of the final look of the glass. Those contours are the look he was going for. If it looks square then what was the point?
his contours on the side don't start until the halfway point. I was just saying he could have used more mdf at the bottom, not the entire side.

How does it sounds when it's so close to your ears? Did it fit well with the fronts?
I did a fiberglass sub too with the same speaker (http://guide-guy.blogspot.com/2009/06/stealth-car-sub-woofer-in-infiniti-fx35.html). It's in a trunk and it's closed. Sounds nice to me but I think it could use some time delay.

this good for first timer like me.
do you have any box vibration when sub is playing on the sides?
how thick is the fiber glass? and i know about not having
patience doing your first project.

I have always made my own boxes out of mdf and left it at that. Now after seeing your work I want to go make ny next one using 'glass. was it difficult for a first timer, or does it just take patience?
