Not a baffle. Your speakers are free air. The need as much space as you can supply to them.

ok, thanks. well the free air comment leads me to ask another question; since my subwoofer is free-air, since im making a new box, would it be possible to leave the sides off? or would it be better for a sql mixture of spl with having a ported box instead?

No it would lead to negative cancellation. In a free air or infinite baffle application the front and rear signals from the speaker have to be separated or they will cancel each other out thus eliminating bass response. It's like having two speakers out of phase.
