depth is more of an issue, but Alpine provides several different mounting rings. you will want to add some weatherstripping foam between the plastic rings and the metal door.

if the supplied mounting rings don't get you what you need, you can always make your own baffle out of MDF.

The speakers should come with a mounting ring, also you can buy 1/2" and 1" spacers at any shop. Usually GMs come with 6 3/4's but a 6 1/2 will fit because the size difference is so small. usually all you have to do is use some self tapping screws and you're golden.

i always use foam between the speaker and spacer and the metal door. you don't want air leaks or rattles. also, foam on the front of the speaker basket so it seals against the factory door panel. that if you don't seal the speaker against the door panel then you need to seal up the entire door panel. otherwise the back wave will cancel with the front causing poor bass response.

factory speakers have odd mounting brackets - sometimes with only three screws. just because it is a 6.5" speaker factory does not mean an aftermarket 6.5" speaker will bolt right up. factory speakers usually have tiny magnets also.

feel free to see how much work it was replacing the 6.5" speakers in a Toyota Tacoma.
