I'm planning a new enclosure for a single 12in JL w6 with incorporated amp rack for my JL 500/1 as well. Enclosure will be going in the trunk of an '02 sedan WRX. My first fiberglass build was fairly easy being that it was just a sono tube , but I'm thinking of stepping it up a notch. I've worked with fiberglass before and know it can be a pain for the inexperienced, but I have lots of time on my hands to play.

With a conventional box, your sort of limited on direction your sub can face. Since the cone can virtually face any direction when doing a glass enclosure… what is the ideal lay out? Is there any sort of advantage to facing it left, right, up or down?

The pic I included isn’t my trunk, but gives you an idea on how my base will be (bottom, slanted back to fit snug against the back seat with possibly sides. Aesthetically speaking… would the setup look okay with the sub mounted on the left, and the amp on the right? Or would it look better if I tried to keep it all centered… sub in the middle with the amp mounted somehow over the sub or below?

I know the easiest way to design a fiberglass enclosure is to make it sealed. Being that I've always been a fan of ported I'm hesitant on going that route incase I don’t like the sound. Is there any trick of the trade for incorporating a port into a fiberglass design? I know it tends to be more difficult since its hard to approximate airspace... but I have seen it done before. Any help and or opinions/suggests are welcome. Thank you much.

And just to add.. I'm considering fiberglass to be able to add a little creativity to my install, and so I can utilize as much space as I can to actually have somewhat of a trunk back. Also, I listen to a variety of music.. from rap/hiphop to dance n techno, to a little rock and jazzy stuff. Favorite band is Dave Matthews... so music simular to his style as well.

Personally based on your music style I think you'd be happier with a sealed enclosure anyway.

As far as the direction of the cone, yes there are advantages and disadvantages but it depends very much on the shape of the panels in the car, the acoustics of it, the materials it's made out of, etc. There really is no right or wrong answer to that. Most people will just experiment with multiple positions, although that's hard to do with fiberglass.

If it were me, I'd build the entire thing into the floor of the car and make it a totally stealth install, but that's just me.

Sorry I'm not more help...lol

well if you want it to look nice i would tilt the subs slightly inward to follow the arc of the bottom...

i dont think for your intents and purposes you will hear a huge huge difference if the subs are facing a certain direction, because judging by the looks of the box the subs are going to be facing back at a slight angle so just roll with that, it should sound fine

Why don't you get your hands on a prefab loaded enclosure (both sealed and ported), hook it up to power and play with the location? This will give you a much better idea of where you're going to place your woofers.

Are you looking to flip the woofers to show the magnets? That could be interesting as well.

i agree with these guys. it really all depends on the acoustics of your car. some people think that the sub should always face out. i guess they thing that it's like a gun or something and they way the sub is facing means the sound is going to go in that direction. personally i think the best thing to do is to do what sqcomp said before you decide on the base of your fabrication. you may want trunk space but you may end up sacrificing sound because your sub will end up firing into your trunk lid. but at the same time it could be the best application for what you want. as far as ported or sealed box, i also agree with what stangeriffic2002 said about the sealed box. ported boxes better for rapp/hip hop type stuff. it's not as crisp but its louder. for an all-purpose application i always use sealed. you lose a little bit of pour but it's a crisper punch. good for the double base petals
