First of all, I am new to this forum.
I have a Boston Whaler 130 sport which I use as a dinghy around the marina. My other boat is a Sea Ray 390 Motor Yacht. I have installed Wet sounds and a Zapco amp on my Sea Ray but am looking to outfit my dinghy with a sound system as well. Part of the problem with the Boston Whaler is that it doesn't have much space for speaker placement. Those familiar with BW know that there is foam injected between the entire interior and the exterior hull so again, space is limited. Here is a link to a picture of a like boat.

I am looking at JL Audio M2250 amp and a pair of JL Audio M650 ccx-cg speakers. I plan on using a RCA plug adapter to hook up my IPod to the system. The outboard motor 40 hp Mercury puts out 16 amps through the altenator and I called JL and they told me the amp draws about 8 amps. I think the amp question should be ok. I thought about placing the speakers in the seat backs. The speakers I chose are infinite models so they don't need an enclosure. I thought about mounting the amp under the steering console. I suppose this might be over kill for a boat this size but I always hate wasting money on a system I wouldn't like. I realize this system isn't going to blow everything out of the water but I thought is should sound good.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about ...the system I chose, the placement of the components or any other suggestions that I might not be thinking about.

Thanks for your input.

One my thing, part of my concern is the speaker placement. There is limited space in the front of the seat backs. They also have a cushion that snaps on the top of the seat. There is only about 4" of open space that is not covered by the cushion. I thought I could unsnap the cushions when I want to crank it up a bit. My only other thought is to purchase a pair of box type speakers and mount them under the bench seat that the console is attached to. I am not aware of any quality box type marine speakers that I could use. Most are priced under $100 and I am not comfortable with how they might sound. Perhaps you might have some suggestions or recommendations? I have looked at an enclosure similar to what might be used on a ATV. Tractor Tunes makes one but it isn't available without buying all the components too. I thought about mounting an enclosure like that under the bench seat and putting the JL speakers in the enclosure. Again, any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

First, take it easy, there are not many marine audio people on the board but insults really dont help much \:\(

Thanks for the side pic but an interior pic may be more helpful. You are right, it is a small boat with very limited room. The tight, foam filled design of the BW makes things even more difficult.

Hard to visualize the seat placement you are talking about????

Without better seeing the seat benches, you might be able to cut into the bench side and dig out the foam to mount the speakers. A simgle wire may need to run from the console to the first then push though the foam from one to the other. Give it a finished look, glass over the flex tubing and spray with simple white gel if you really want clean lines. Dont know how that may compromise the foam down the road or boats resale for someone with a non-stereo mindset, if that is a concern.

An economical, yet good sounding route for surface mounts might be the Bazooka MT6502CHB or MT8002CHB (compression horn). They are about half the price of WetSounds, have never heard them but they might be a lower cost option. Prob have to get a little creative on a mount.

On the high side would be the WetSounds again on the surface mount with either the Pro X or MC series that have a flush mount to go into the Malibu Illusuion or MC towers???

If you are looking for a sub, Bazooka makes a crazy Scuba looking tube sub that does a stand alone job.

Cheers to the start of boating season!! stop back by and maybe you can help someone with their questions........
