Hi - I'm installing my first marine stero. I have a 16 foot starcraft fishing boat with a casting deck. there's a perfect spot to mount a stereo inside of one of the front stow compartments... but i'm not sure how to go about it.

I have a waterproof cover for the face of the stereo, and while the body of the unit will be inside a compartment, that compartment is not entirely waterproof. most console-mounted stereos look like they have some sort of built-in enclosure in which to put the stero... but i don't have that since i'm putting it in a unique location.

any recommendations on an enclosure or other way to protect my stereo receiver? I can find surface-mount boxes, but not an enclosure that's made for mounting into a console or box.

thanks!!

Any pics of the overall boat and location you have in mind?

One concern would be if the other side of the storage compartment leads to the hull / bilge. Water and high humidity could make short work of the head unit.

Is this fresh or salt water?
What is your goal? Music out of 2-4 coax speakers or more?

Fresh water.

It's essentially this boat right here:

My boat - sorta

EXCEPT it's a tiller model, thus no console. the stereo will be mounted in the little "step up" to the casting deck, facing out toward the back of the boat. there is a flip-up compartment right behind the pedestal seat up front, though you can't see it in this picture. the stereo body will be in there and the display will stick out the front of that step.

But water can get into that compartment (rain water is my biggest concern), so i want to protect the unit obviously.

goal is music out of 2 speakers, also mounted into that step. thanks!

The water getting into that compartment is a concern. Even an enclosure around the HU would still have an opening for the wiring harness which would allow significant moisture to the HU as well as the voice coils of the speakers.

You could build a small box to hold the HU and speakers in one. Cover with indoor/outdoor carpet or paint?
Using treated plywood with 2x2 reinforcement in corners if it will be used as a seat or step. Seal all joints with a silicone like sealant.

a standard radio or cooler radio any interest? http://www.coleman.com/coleman/ColemanCom/detail.asp?product_id=6257-773

If you listen to your ipod only, skip the head unit and go with a small amp. get a 3.5mm to RCA cord. you can have much more power going to your speakers, cheap.

You will also need a full size (27 or 31) deep cycle battery. Charge it after each use as the little alternator on your OB will not be enough. Leaving a battery partially charged is the second fastest way to shorten its life, next to running it down below 10v.

Sorry, boats that size are functional at getting a guy on the water cheap but they dont leave much for extras.

thanks for the ideas. my latest idea is to use a marine battery case as an enclosure. and to also put some gaskets on the compartment to limit water entry.

I also already bought the HU and speakers, so i'm committed \:\)

any other ideas?

thx

the battery compartment idea would work. make sure you have all wire grommets on the bottom - you want a drain hole also, but not where the wires are so you don't wick moisture. seal the wire grommets with silicone then add a small 1/8" drain hole or two in the lowest parts.

make sure your HU is marine rated - otherwise it will not last long if exposed to humidity. and make sure both the face and the unit are water resistant. I had bad luck with a Sony that had a normal faceplate - which failed when button contacts wore off.

as long as the speaker enclosures are sealed and waterproof you are good to go.

you can make any enclosure you want from treated lumber and epoxy resin and fiberglass.
