Hello. Ive lurked for a while and think I have decent idea of whats going on, I hope I dont come across as an idiot. I just bought a truck and it came without a working stereo. I pulled out the broken TAPE player, and put in my Alpine, soldered and heat shrunk all the wiring.
My pair of stock 4 inchers just arent doing it. After long thoughts of which direction I wanted to go, I think Im finally set on ditchin the 4's, goin with 1 amp, 1 6.5 comp set, and one sub. Im probably going to go Kicker zx700.5, Alpine type R 6.5 components, and a Memphis shallow mount 12. The cab of my singe cab truck is very small, and I feel like this will be plenty of sound.
How do I mount the components? There are no factory speaker openings in the doors. Its about an 1/8 inch sheet of cardboard covered in vynal. I pulled the panel and there is no metal behind the panel to mount an mdf baffle ring. What are your thoughts on mounting the driver to the door panel? Ive read alot of the posts about sound deading, and theirs are always mounted to the factory opening on the inner skin. Help?

kick panel installs don't always work or make sense. anything is possible, but that level of fabrication may be above your skill level - it's just at my comfort level. maybe change the speaker type, get a midrange/midbass that wants a small enclosure instead of being free air mounted in a door. that way you can just surface mount a small enclosure on the bottom of the door - carpeted to match. the Type-R won't work for this.
or, build up the speaker mount with some MDF rings, then cut through the door panel and door steel to allow the speaker to play into the door.

you are also going to have to worry about the depth of the speaker. I know those older imports the glass comes right to that inner corner making mounting deep speakers a pain in the ass.

Thats where im hoping the MDF or non void birch will come into play. Ive seen it done a lot, so I know it can be done. Im just lookin to the sq and install guys for guidance on the best way to attach the speaker and baffle to the door and any tips or tricks. Would ya still need NHMC, Do I need a baffle with more mass to help solidify the speaker and keep it and the baffle held firmly in place?

secure the baffle to metal - but with deadener and clay/foam sandwiched between the metal and MDF rings. the hole in the door and panel just needs to vent the cavity. i wouldn't sandwich the panel, cut the panel out a bit larger then make a trim ring to hide the cut. the door metal hole will need to be smaller than the MDF rings so they can mount. maybe integrate T-nuts in the rings then the bolts will come through the inside.
buy a thin mount speaker to save depth.
this will most likely introduce rattles in the door. deadener would be a good idea.
