Hey...new to all this marine stereo stuff. Just bought a boat that has 4 clarion CM1625(6.5") speakers 100watt max and two polk audio DB651(6.5") canned speakers on the tower wich are 60 watts continuous 180 watt peak. There is no amp yet driving this set up so I am wondering exactly what I am going to be needing?

you can look at Clarion or Alpine for good marine amps and headunits. depending on the application, you can put a regular amp in an enclosed space, like under the dash.

you'll get your power from the battery - run it directly from the battery to the amp. don't ground to the boat frame - all wires, power and ground to directly back to the battery or batteries.

if you plan on running the system with the boat off i suggest getting a second battery and isolator, and possibly some solar panels to keep the battery charged when it's sitting - assuming it sits out in the sun.

OK Thanks. I get that end of it, but what i am having trouble with is this....If am trying to run 6 speakers do I need a 6 channel amp and when it comes to sizing do I consider the continuous watts or the peak. The clarions are 50 contin/100max and the polk are 60 contin/180 max.

oh, no, 4 channels are fine. the 4 channel amps can run 2 four ohm speakers per channel. you could run eight speakers from a 4 channel amp - all channels at 2 ohms.

the layout of the speakers will determine which two you should pair up. i would suggest wiring the Clarion speakers together into two channels and give the polk's their own channels. the crossover and gain will probably be different for those speakers anyway. you'll want to run the Clarion full range but high pass the polk speakers.

Well, that makes more sence!! So I am looking for a 4 channel (bridgable or not?)amp. Any suggestions on size of wattage the amp should be. I was also reading that in order to hook up to a 4 channel amp my head unit must have at least 2 preouts...is this true?

you don't need it to be bridgeable but it most likely will be.

wattage depends on what you can provide for power - i.e. boat alternator and battery size. also, how loud do you want to be?

some 4 channel amps need 2 sets of preouts, some only need one. having two sets will give you easy control using your fader, try to get a head unit that has 2 preouts.

if you can afford an Alpine marine PDX then go for it. The Clarion gear is also very good. http://www.clarion.com/us/en/products/2008/marine/index.html

K well, I checked it out and the alternator is 65 amps and the battery is 1000 cranking amps or 750 cold cranking amps. As for how loud....as loud as I can do for those speakers I guess, although I would imagine I would want to the tower ones to put out a little more...no?

both speakers will be similar in performance. how much power each should get will totally depend on their enclosure and their location.

get us some pictures or drawings of how they are installed.

first you need to host the picture on a site - like photobucket. from photobucket you can get the image location. our FAQ section describes how to post pictures using [img] [/img] tags

i put two of those same Clarion speakers on my dad's boat. along with four of Clarions 7" speakers and two tens. i have him running around 400-500W RMS with two amps. we use solar panels to keep the optima blue top fully charged when not in use.

nice boat. everyone sitting next to a speaker is far from ideal. you always want to get a pair (left and right) in front of you and as equidistant as possible. the Polk speakers mounted on the bar may sound better simply because of their location. but really, you just want background music on a boat, you don't typically worry about a sound stage.

it looks like the Clarion speakers are enclosed - that is what i was looking for.

Thanks for the info, Any suggestions on amp size? I was also considering one of those 8" bazooka tubes that looks like a scuba tank any ideas on where to place that? It would require its own mono amp too right?

you'll want to experiment with locations - maybe in the front storage. yes, you'll need an amp to run it. if you got one good 5 channel amp to run all of the speakers you could reduce your system complexity and foot print.

JL Audio makes some VERY nice marine amps and marine subs. They also have components and the bullet style enclosures.

just remember that boats are a very harsh environment. Amps get very hot. Be sure that you get a quality amp, and have plenty of airflow over them. I suggest that you get at least one sub and some very efficient tower pods. These should be getting at least 150w rms to each of them, so your wakeboarder can hear them.

i would avoid the engine compartment completely.

under the dash is the safest place typically.
