hi i have alpine f550 90 rms powering 17xrefs upfront 75rms. typer 6.5 outback 100rms. both chanels set to 80 herts and gains set to norm. ref sigs are 4volt from 9886. all of this stuff is new less than a week old. this amp is extremly hot to touch.next to it is a m500 and typer 10 sub set to 2 ohms 500rms. that one does not get hot at all same settings.

you may have a wiring issue - like a few strands touching that reduce the impedance/resistance the amp sees.
disconnect the speaker wires from the amp and use a DMM to measure resistance - it should be >3 ohms for each speaker.

^^^Definitely check those out, but also remember that a class AB amp will run quite a bit hotter than a class D amp. Too hot to hold your hand on for more than 3 seconds may indicate trouble though.

if everything checks out ok maybe add a fan blowing across the heat sinks.

also, how is it wired? i assume each speaker has it's own channel and your fader works. if you can use fader/balance to isolate each speaker then you should have it wired correctly. if you cannot then maybe you have it wired wrong - like bridged at 2 ohm.

well i mesured all wires separate and through the cross over .all 3.2 ohms. i have 4 gauge coming from bat to digetal fuse block 4 gauge to sub amp and 8 gauge to speaker amp ran out of wire. i have 12 gauge to the 4 spakers. woundering if type x ref are extremly power hungry voltage drops below 12.8 when big bass notes hit. wondering if that much drop creating resitence causing amp to work harder? i was thinking of using f250 1oorms briged would be better for fronts and add a set of mids in rear door to fill the chanels on 550. and of course put 4 gauge to all. heat may be normal it does not shutoff or clip .

thanks for the detail as to how the amps are wired to the battery. i'm most interested in how the speakers are wired to the amps. got a diagram you followed (i.e. from the owner's manual) or a pic?
you determine how much power your speakers get - with the gain and the volume setting. if the speakers are too loud you can turn them down with the gain on those channels.
a 100W amp and a 500W amp can both put out 100W depending on those settings. the difference is the 500W amp won't be working as hard. having a larger amp then you need can help the amp run cooler and with less distortion.
i've used fans when class A/B amps got hot playing 2 ohm loads.

from amp to crossover. crossover to one door speaker. crossover to tweeter.thats for front channels 1 and 2. amp to rear speakers using channels 3 and 4. straight up 4ohm 4 channel wiring. all of the speaker wire is brand new 12 gauge. fader and balance all work correctly. i can hold my hand on the amp but i wouldnt want to do it for long. this is my first 4 channel amp.im kinda used to 2 channel so maybe normal. i have a nother question the tweeters seam very loud at above half volume and i have crossover set to -6deb and you only seem to hear base out of mids when turned up nothing when turned down.

found problem when i connected to crossover i used coated terminals on one crossover and reguler female blades on other they were not touching from what icould see but must of been close enough to cause interfernce i changed connecters to coated and no more hot amp at all plus no more high s from tweets. please tell me more on biamping these crossover for more control. i read to use hu for rear speaker so that they are rear fill only and do not iterfere with front sound stage.i would like to get more out of front but not sure on how to doit correctly. thank you jerry. your help is greatly appreciated.

the back of the box shoes 2 amps used i was thinking of using the same amp channels 3 4 and just turning down the gain on tweets this should give me controll over the tweets and wolf from deck thru fader? or what do you recomend.

yes, that would work. the main purpose of bi-amping is for more flexible level control - since you're still using the crossover.
the next step is to go full active and ditch the passives - this requires a good active crossover. it's also trickier and you lose any tweeter protection that was in the passive crossovers.
