I'm looking at adding some bass to my Impala SS (06) which has quite a large trunk so I have some space to spare. Money... well.. since I'll be buying these over some time I wouldn't mind to spend around $500-750 for a good entry level system. I listen to pretty much everything so no preference there really. I guess what I'm considering at this time is perhaps a 1 12'' or 15'' Kicker Comp VR in a ported box (or should I go sealed for better versatility?) With maybe a kicker 400.1 amp to power 1 sub. While even that doesn't come to $500 I'm mainly looking for a 1 sub setup to round out some lows and bump some (which the VR's do sound nice doing both from what I recall).
So the issues I'm facing
12 or 15 inch?
Ported or Sealed
Other suggestions, L5 or L7's?

Since your looking to just add some bass to your music, I'm assuming you don't want it too overwhelming correct? If that's the case and your looking for bass that is accurate and sounds good in the low frequency range, I would reccomend looking into the RE Audio's SE line, Fi Audio's Q line, Image Dynamics IDQ or maybe even something a little heavier like the RD Audio Alpha series.
Judging by your lack of general car audio knowledge, I'll go ahead and assume you haven't heard of all those names. Just do some reasearch and you will find out pretty quickly that name brands like Kicker or Jl audio don't always have the best equipment. I'm not trying to rag on you, just helping you out

No problem and I appreciate the help as I don't have extensive knowledge of car audio. The reason I was leaning toward Kicker is their availability and price. As a watch collector, however, I do realize that the most popular brands aren't always the best, (read: Rolex).
I'll take a look into the Image Dynamics, are there any offerings from Diamond audio that may be appropriate here?

What about Infinity Kappa Perfect subs? Anyone like or dislike them for specific reasons?

I've heard that they sound well but from my reading, the brand isn't that well regarded due to poor build quality.
