I am wanting to get my dash fiberglassed to where it looks like one big piece and it has a glossy black look to it.. I have never worked with fiberglass but the cheapest around here wants close to 1000 to do it. My buddy said we could do it but i dont know how much I want to try this. For people that have done it, how hard is it?

i've never done it, but that's a pretty complicated job to take on. It will take a LOT of work to make it look good. I think a grand isn't too unreasonable once you consider how many hours of sanding it'll take for it to look right. I've seen other custom dashes done and they do take a while. I'd say it's pretty high up on the list of difficult things to do in a car.

You can try it if you choose to just understand that the materials will run you a descent amount of money and if you do not do it correct that could be money wasted. If you want it to look good I would save up and pay for it to be done.

if you do want to learn how to fiberglass i would say start with smaller projects first. doing a dash would be a ton of work to do as a first time project.

a grand is not just reasonable its a bargain...
i know for a one-off dash painted and everything i would want probably twice that.

i assume the price is just fabric glued to the dash then coated in resin then painted. i doubt you'll get any actual glass matte and the intensive sanding that will result for that price. they may even plan on just leaving it in the car and masking the hell out of the vehicle.

To be honest 1000 sounds like a helluva deal, I wouldn't let that in my shop for less than 3500, and even then I wouldn't be too enthused about it. That said, i would be a little weary about the quality of work this shop is going to do for the price they quoted you.
for sure...i agree...even 2 grand would be a good deal, dashes are a real PITA, probably one of the most in-depth projects you can do for fiberglassing...
if you have never any type of FG'ing i would try a simple box, maybe some door pods or something before you [censored] up your dash
