Hey Guys,
I have a STD Cab 1993 F150 and i'm trying to put together a decent sound system. I already installed a new HU (JVC KD-SH1000) and new speakers (Front Pioneer TS-D1602R) (Back TS-D6802R) are on the way. I hear these speakers will sound very good without an amp so i'm not too worried about them. However, i would like a subwoofer behind the seat.
As i'm sure you know, i have hardly any space to spare. I love bass, but i'm not a guy who is "ok" with having his knees stuck to the dash so i need something compact that still packs a punch. I've been looking at shallow mount subwoofers by various brands but i get mixed opinions on those. I would like to stick with Pioneer, but i wouldn't mind going for something else. It doesn't have to be "shallow" either, as long as it fits behind the seat. I've been working with the RE Enclosure Calculator a bit and i came up with the following numbers; 35, 15, 5, 8, 0.75, 2, 8. Now, i dont know if that's a "good" box or not, but it'll fit behind the seat easily and i think it'll hold 2 woofers, whether they're 8" or 10". But, 2 isn't necessary...i'll go for 1 12" woofer if it would be better, as long as it fits.
Now, like i said i love bass but i dont want my truck to rattle like a sob. I want to keep it to myself, rather than have the entire block know about my subwoofer. I've looked at several powered subwoofer "drop in" solutions like the Blaupunkt THB2008 & THB 210A and the MTX Thunderlink.
Basically, i need help! I dont know what's the best bang for the buck with all these brands. I have about $300/$400 to spend on the Sub/Amp combination so i'm kinda asking you guys to put something together for me. Whether it's powered or not, it doesn't matter.
Thanks for reading through my story, and thanks in advance for any help ya'll are willing to give me.

I know they have custom Truck Subwoofer Enclosures. You can check here and see if any of the dimentions will fit in your car: Angled Subwoofer Systems . If its right next to you open in the air you should be good with 200-400W RMS if don't need so much power it will leave the car. I'm no expert or anything though.

@ Flattop, i have heard several systems but never in a STD Cab F150. I've heard a 500W RMS Rockford sub in a ported box which i thought sounded great, but i think it'll be too much for me. I like the "rolling" bass, but i think i'd be happier with a clean, thumping bass for my own daily driver. I have looked at a lot of brands, but i never really had any input from people who know what's what when it comes to SQ.
@ Remobeater, i've looked at that site A LOT and i went through that list a bunch of times. I just can't make up my mind without some serious "professional" advise.
@ Basher, i have looked at that set so many times, i just dont know what to think. I dont have a CC near me, i'll have to look for the closest location. As far as a 2nd sub goes, i think i'd rather put 2 of them in the same enclosure instead of having 2 seperate ones. There's a "MECP" car audio shop near me, they sell Kicker & Memphis. Maybe they'll match that price, too. I'll have to go and see what my options are.
To all, thank you for your helpful replies!

I dont know, they're pretty lame around here when it comes to internet price-matching. I'm not sure if i want to go for that set, i'm kind of partial to the Solo Baric subs.

The problem is that the internet retailers are simply selling the gear and don't have to service it. If you buy something from an online retailer and have it installed locally who are you taking it back to when you have a problem? Then when you have a problem with the product, the installing dealer ends up servicing product they didn't even sell and you end up mad at them when you have to pay them to remove it so you can send it back to the retailer. Remember, when you by locally and have a problem, the store that sold you the product takes care of the costs in this situation. No paying for removal and re-installation. They also cover the cost of the shipping back to the manufacturer which isn't cheap these days.
The internet is good for one thing... low prices. It doesn't help with customer service. I hear these internet horror stories all the time and often the customer just ends up with broken gear because they blew that cash buying stuff on the internet and can't afford to replace it now. Also, I've been seeing some bait and switch stuff lately. I would make sure they actaully have what you are buying in stock before they just ship you "like product."

Then you need to do your research. There are a great deal of companies who sell direct and online shops that provide excellent service. The accessabilty and availability of some of these smaller companies are far superior to most standard shops. And for anyone who buys online has to understand that it is up to them to get the product installed correctly or learn and do it themselves. It is not the responsibility of the company or the online shop to show up and fix the mistakes of the install, but they can help through emails and phone calls.
On top of that fact, there is a growing number of high quality smaller companies who are having difficulty getting brick and mortar dealers to pick up their lines because of the dealers expected massive margins that have been an effect of the large mainstream brands who have gone over seas and produce thousands upon thousands of items with very cheap parts and labor.
Now you can blame that effect on big box stores or the shift of some of the market to online. But in reality, the online market is still very small in the over all picture. In addition, just like in all aspects of business, you have to adapt and advance to stay on top, or in many cases to stay a float.
There are far far more horror stories of young or inexperienced customers who are fed industry myths and excessive lies to force them into buying from that brick and mortar dealer, where when that customer walks into that store, they are subject to only that source of heavily biased info. Most of the time, those poor customers are buying way more then they need and spending a great deal more money then they should. All the while they could have done some research on their own and found bargains and built the system on their own saving a great deal of their hard earned money.
There are many advantages of going online; the massive amount of resources and information about products and installs, being able to talk directly to many companies, reading tutorials and how to's, finding better and more efficient ways to do things, learn and read feedback from customers on all the products they are interested in and on and on. You make it out like the online shops are just taking the money and running, when that is not true in a number of different companies.
Keeping in mind I managed two different car audio shops in the past, and I have seen both sides of the fence here.
