Fist off I listen to mostly metal and progressive rock along with stuff like peter tosh and some trance/techno once in a while.
I need to know what i need to do. or need to buy. Either tuning the crossover on my amp or buying an equalizer. The amp has sub sonic and LPF knbos. Cash is an issue at the moment but is flexible for decent quality products.
It seems that i listen to an artist the bass range from my subs sound kinda off. sometimes the kick drum hits and feels perfect but then the higher end of bass is too loud or too soft, or i never hear/feel the low notes. The only way I've seemed to 'fix' my problem is going into my trunk and constantly changing the crossover.
I'm wondering if there's just a way to set up the crossovers so i can have as much range as possible within reason or if i need to buy an equalizer, new head unit, or just tune my amp properly
btw i know my setup is weird. i just made some mistakes when purchasing.
Thanks for any help Rob

Also, do you have an amp on your front stage, and where are your 5 1/4's installed and what deadening have you done around them?

first off, one problem may be that you have two different sized subs. mixed sizes can be done, but how they are integrated to the car is key in the sound produced.
I realized that. When i bought the 12" DB i had no idea it was 12" big until i got my 10" sub.
not knowing much i only guessed that if i did crossover right that i could have more of the lows / subsonic be brought to the 12" and more of the high end / mid bass into the 10" but im starting to realize i have to do a lot more work to accomplish that than with what i have now
i do have a couple questions. the first one is, what is your main source for your music? Cd's, MP3's, Ipod, etc.? Generally Zune plugged into the front. sometimes MP3 CD's or orig. copies.
the second is, could you post some pics of your set up? in the morning/midday i'll take some..(im on east coast) I can tell you this. the 10" is in a MTX sealed box. the 12" is in a custom built (it was already built. i didn't do it) and the cap isn't mounted. but planning to be soon just need to finde the right place
Also, do you have an amp on your front stage I have no amp for the front. I'm planning to upgrade to component speakers, then i will power the front.
where are your 5 1/4's installed and what deadening have you done around them? the speakers are located in the door (near my knee)
so far no sound deadening but need to soon.
as of now I feel more concerned with the bass. of my music so far but i understand it's all important for the correct setup
ps. i forgot to mention i installed everything myself (head unit, cap, speakers, amp and subs) so it isnt professionally installed but works fine. just doesnt look great.

Ok. well with my organization (lack of) i dont keep the greatest care of CD's all the time.
After some research i believe one sub is DVC and one is not. and i think this may be a problem... i'll post pics soon

well with the front i did cut out so that the seal is flush with the enclosure just enough room for cabling to fit through, no air. i guess i'll get rid of the 12" and get anotehr 10 or just leave it at the single 10"
does speaker wire length affect performance? i notice i have a lot of extra patch cable between speakers causing interference possibly? or no?

Roboz, As you already know, you SO upside down on your system. But this is alright. The most important aspect of your issues are that you’re here (in this forum) and willing to take your system to the next level. Small and the number of issues all add up to what you're experiencing.
If the bass is important to you, then put your money into matching one of the subs that already own. Additional match the sub-box as well. Sell the items you are not using on Craigslist or on Ebay, and save up for the next needed component/s.
Yeah, having a wire passing through the speaker’s flange is a major NO-NO. (Did you caulk the speaker ring and flange?) If anything, drill a simple hole from the back or side, pass the wire through, and seal it with silicone at the gaps (both sides). Problem solved and move onto the next issue.
Typical starting subwoofer crossover point starts at 80 and can be repositioned (sweep) +\-20 Hz from that point. Also, this is dependant of the capability of the crossover component. But you need a stable baseline to get the best sounding bass, which means matching subs and sub box or boxes (internal air volume).
Depending on you goals, you’ll need to pick which area will be you next attack area: head unit, speakers (coaxial, components, total power), power supply, speaker placement, and installation of the entire system. Because of your limited funds, be patient and be smart about your sound system investment.

update: I realized the 12" DB is useless and is now taking up trunk space. It took a lot of guesswork with tuning the amplifier, but now i feel it is near perfect sounding for every artist / genre. Sub-sonic and LPF are turned about 5º left of center, bass boost 60~70%, level 40-50%.
Sometimes i want it to hit the lower end for certain tracks such as bass drops, and wish the kick drum was more distinct feeling. Sometimes the kick is very noisy and not as much feeling to the kick where i have noticed in the past, even when a drummer is using triggers. But i notice if i do the slightest adjustments everything is out of whack again.
My personal carelessness is when I was securing the amplifier to the box and i didnt realize i had it upside down. When i bought the MTX box which the 10" momo is in it wasn't easy at all to drill in the holes with a Dewalt. It was hard to mark and the holes were very close to the edge. After all the struggle with mounting i decided to just leave it.
I am now overall satisfied now, and thanks for all the tips on the mistakes I've made. Next thing I'm looking into is MMC5250 component system quality 6x9's, but this will require a second amplifier and/or new head unit, an upgraded capacitor most likely, and more labor, which is no fun in the winter. I'm just looking for crisp quality.
One thing i noticed with a sweep track from 20Hz-20khz is a lot of things are resonating inside my car which i suspect needs sound proofing just adding more to the bill =[
anyway thanks for all the useful info
-Roboz
