MY friend sold me this system for 50 bucks

i got two 10'' dynex subwoofers..if im not mistaken with 400 watts each

and a Dual XAF460 2 Channel Amplifier 460 watts

and i my boy was tryin to connect it..when i find out i need a REM wire..

but my question is it alright to have that many watts or whatever..someone needs 2 explain to me how do the subwoofer and amp watts work, like does the amp need more than the subs??

You have an amplifier that is 85 x 2 at 4 ohms RMS. Your speakers can handle 150 watts RMS.

Max power means nothing. it's the continuous or RMS power that you look at. You could have a 10,000 watt speaker and a 10 watt speaker side by side. if you only put 5 watts to it they will sound the same. 5 watts is 5 watts.

The remote wire is the signal that turns the amplifier on.

this is a simple break-down of how an audio system works:

the head unit or source generates an audio signal as a voltage that varies in frequency with time. it is important to know that the signal is voltage.

whether the head unit is powering speaker or an external amplifier, the source transmits the audio signal (voltage) on wires or traces to the amplifier.

the amplifier does just as it's name implies, it amplifies - specifically doing so in three steps.

step 1: it receives the signal from the source and prepares it for actual amplification - this is called the pre-amp.

step 2: the signal voltage is increased many times. what started out as a 2V signal may now be 30V or more. the signal looks pretty much the same as before, just larger.

step 3: the new high voltage signal is passed through a current source, part of the circuit that allows for high current to flow (amperes). sometimes step 2 and 3 may be in the same IC or chip.

The amplifier presents a high voltage audio signal at it's terminals. if nothing is connected, nothing happens except a little heat.

a speaker has a voice coil that is simply a wire wrapped in a circle. this is placed in the center of a large magnet. this coil of wire is essentially an inductor with a specific impedance curve. additionally, physics take over at the free air resonance of the woofer causing an impedance spike. regardless, the amplifier sees a load who's impedance varies with frequency.

the amplifier applies a high voltage signal to the speaker, the impedance in the speaker determines current. multiply voltage and current (Ohm's law) and you get power.

if you reduce the impedance of the speaker or speaker array you increase current, thus increasing power. the reverse is also true.

the current in the voice coil causes its own magnetic field - which interacts with the large magnets of the speaker, and the coil moves. it's called magnetic induction - and it is fascinating stuff.

specifically it's not power that makes a speaker move - it's current. current as a result of a voltage applied to the speaker.

you asked how subwoofer and amps work. that is my answer off the top 'o my head. it took roughly 4 minutes to type but should be fairly accurate. it's late and i have work to do.

oh, and welcome to Sound Domain. please feel free to ask as many questions as you have.
