Since getting feedback I couldn't resist trying to start fixing things tonight.

Main thing on all the judging sheets was lack of focus. Scott helped me out with this after judging and it's a lot better. I did some more fine tuning and it's a tad better than when I left Boaz. I'll probably leave that alone for a few days and take a break from focus/imaging.

Moving on to midbass, which Matt said lacked tonality...

So, apparently 80hz doesn't like my car? I dug out the RTA and positioned it about 5 different ways. No matter what 80-85hz is down about 5db on the right side, even after bumping 63/80/100hz substantially. I tinkered around with various eq points and still can't get 80hz to register somewhat flat. But, when using the pink noise CD I don't hear a difference in levels. Trust my ears... \:confused\:

I managed to get rid of the resonance in the left side by bringing down 80hz/63hz -2db on the right. I kept focusing on the left midbass, then finally shut it down to check the right side. Sure enough, the right midbass was causing the resonance. A few cuts and it's a lot better. Go figure.

My variovents are rattling, too. I might be pulling the Scans out and try to tune the enclosures. Stuff an AP enclosure with polyfill? Seems self defeating, but I don't know.

This car audio thing leaves me confus-ed.

It sounds good man, keep working on it. Just use the rta for finding peaks and dips in response. Or possibly some particular note that sounds funny to find out what frequency it is. The rta is just a place to start. In the end your ears are the best tuning tool.

Thanks, Scott.

I got in my car this morning and I had resonance again. Weird... I checked the presets and all the changes I made last night were gone. Just like yesterday when we reset the x-over points. All changed again. I think preset 3 is messed up, seriously. I remember having trouble with #5 a while back so I quit using it.

Spanish Harlem: when the piano starts up, the first key strike (on the right hand side of the listener) is too hot. Keys on the left sound fairly neutral but keys on the right are shouty. Is it supposed to be like this?

Grandma’s Hands: finger snap sounds like it’s about ½” above singer and very far left; almost seems like its right next to my window. Also, I notice that some of the snaps don’t sound alike. The first few have much more snap to them, where another few sound very dull.

I’m trying to score better than 73 next time so I’d appreciate the help. ;\)

on spanish harlem, the piano should be almost sibilant on some notes, but shouldn't glare. This is where watching an RTA while the song is playing helps, but I think the range is around 1-4k. That's pretty loose, but try toying around with that.

On finger snaps, they should be back, and way left. Hearing them sound different is a good thing. Also on mine (and this prolly isn't right), but it seems like the snaps move around a little bit too.

Great questions, keep them up! My first score was a 70.5. Getting a 73 average from Dave, Kirk, and Matt from a all but out of the box stereo is impressive. You keep working on it during the winter and you're going to be deadly next year. ;\)

Mine don’t seem sibilant. The left side sounds pretty good but the notes on the right side (heck, I hope you’re supposed to be able to tell that they’re on different sides of the stage) sound more shouty.

Mine move a bit, too. They start out close to me, but they also move back toward my windshield.

Thanks. My wife was psyched I got a trophy. I didn’t tell her there were only 2 competitors, lol.

I think I might even try to make the Tn show just to get another crack at judging before the year is up. I don’t think I wait until February. \:\(
I started a journal this morning with this stuff. I’ll keep adding to it. That way when I hear yours and others’ cars again I’ll know exactly what to listen for.

My goal is to reach 80 by year’s end. \:o Aim high, sorta thing. ;\)

DEFINITELY keep a journal. I keep mine in my car. Also hang on to all your scoresheets so you can compare notes from similar judges. Something else that's good to do that I need to start doing is write down all the settings on your preset on one of those papers and then attach it to the sheet. That way you know what preset got what remarks.

On the piano notes, maybe play with the eq just on that side and see if you can tame them a bit.

I'm not going to lie, 80 is pretty lofty, but you have a solid install, great equipment, and a ton of great resources at your fingertips. If you show up to hang out at finals, see if you can get some tips after judging is over with.

Dude, I'm excited to see what your car will do next year! \:bd\:

I will keep a journal. Good idea with writing down settings. I could keep an excel file of that, too. I didn’t write down my settings from judging this time though and I’ve already changed them. Oh well.. they were pretty bad apparently anyway.

When you say 80hz is lofty, do you mean in general?

Dude, I’m seriously pulling for this thing to hit 80 in Ten. May be expecting too much but I’ve got to aim for something. If I could get 78, I’d probably be happy with that. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do in a short time. ;\)

I’m buying a c701 now, lol. All that going back and forth on the h/u and my seat is getting old.

i mean scoring an 80 is lofty. Also, as you get closer to finals, the judging gets more strict, so it's harder to get a higher score. That's the biggest thing you have going against you right now. Well, that and time. But who needs sleep anyways? ;\)

Ahhh, gotcha. I’m just dreaming big. ;\)

The hardest part is figuring out what needs to be tuned now. I’ve been digging around on the forums trying to see if I can find where people have broken down certain tracks and specified how certain things should sound. I got the Chesky disc last night so I’ll start there.

yup, been there. The biggest thing to figure that out is to listen to someone's car that you know sounds right. I've bugged the piss out of Dave all year round about things.

The other way to figure out how things sound good is to have a good reference set of home speakers to listen to. I was talking to Scott about this yesterday. My problem is 1) I don't want to spend a grand and build a set of scan monitors, and 2) i don't have a good place to set them up. High quality headphones can get you a tonality reference, along with left and right queues, but it's still not in front of you, so the sense of depth is gone. Also, any headphone set you get will still have its own coloration. Throw that in with usually needing a headphone amp for a high end set, and you're back to square one. One thing about competing is if you really want to win and be the best, it's not cheap.

One thing I am happy with is that I actually have everything installed now. Now it’s just all tuning from here. It’s less stressful tuning than it is doing an install; at least for me.

You going to be at the Tn state finals?

It’d be nice if a lot of us could get together before World’s or Tn State to do some tuning. I’d gladly open back up my house to that if folks thought they’d be able to come out. Or maybe we can find a parking deck somewhere?... lol

i'll be at tn state finals, but will be driving up that morning. I try to get there about when registration opens, so get there at the same time, and I'll try and offer whatever help I can.

World Finals we are planning on staying the night, and then tuning. If you want to jump in the mix and help, you're more than welcome. I'm not sure how rooms will go, but we can figure that out later. We got a pretty good deal at a Hilton about 5 minutes from the fairgrounds for hifi buys, and plan on staying there again.

I’d be driving to the Tn state finals for sure. No $ for a room. Probably would do the same for World’s since I won’t be competing. Might even try to catch a ride if I can. That’s so far from now I’m not even thinking about it, though.

Dude, I’m ready to get home and start trying to bring down the piano on the right side. \:\)

yeah i know what you mean. i didn't get home until late last night b/c i had to drop the kid off and take care of some stuff, but i have a sheet full of comments i want to address. at world finals, try and listen to as many cars as you can with music you know by heart, and critically listen for details that you hadn't heard before.

On the 3rd pluck of the bass on "spanish harlem" are any of you guys getting an extended resonance? I've gotten rid of most of it, but I'm not sure if there's supposed to be some in there or not.

Also, a couple of the plucks further into the song sound like they're more deep and almost like the speaker is bottoming out, though mechanically it looks fine; I pulled the cover off to watch it.

lol, yup. that note is 71Hz. That means you get to play with 63 and 80 in your car. They're pulled down pretty low in mine, I think -9 on one side, and -6 on the other.

Also make sure your MX isn't on. Mine was half the season and I couldn't tame that note for anything. \:o

MX is off.

Good to hear that. I've already pulled down 63/80 -2db on both sides. It really made a difference, but I'm worried pulling it down anymore will cause me to lose some punch in the kicks. But, what you said just saved me a trip to hear your car. ;\)

Welcome to SQ competition. \:D

I can't remember if you are running a 3 way.

If so, you could cut the level of the midbass. Then use the EQ to bring everything else in the midbass range back up to where you need it. Just leave 63 and 80 cut. That will give you more cut than just the EQ. I actually have 63 and 80 boosted in my car. I don't know what you guys are doing wrong. \:D

W3rd.

I've got some things to nail down and this is definitely one of them. It could also be that the enclosure/vent needs tuning. But, before going that route I’m wanting to make sure that this problem is typical. If it’s not, then I know it’s the install and need to pull the speaker out and work on the AP vent and maybe lay deadener in the firewall area.

I got the IASCA Setup disc last night and I’m going to be going through that for the next couple weeks. Whoopi (not Goldberg)

I did just pick up a bnib c701+cable for $103 shipped, though. \:\)

Well, then. Touché! ;\)

I’m not going to touch them… not at least until I do some tuning and listening to other cars which won’t be until Worlds.

I do, however, think I’ll try to add some wire mesh to the rings he made me. I’ve got to take my car to get tires rotated/balanced at Sears. Made me realize that anytime I let someone in there and they don’t know what’s down there… well. YIKES!

I already have that stuff at the house. Use it to keep the dogs from digging holes under the fence.
