i have been building boxes for a pretty long while and i would like to possibly start doing flared ports.

is there a formula or a specific way to figure out how far apart/deep to make the kerfs to get certain radii?

any help is appreciated, otherwise im just gonna practice on scrap

as far as depth goes, i believe you only want to go 3/8" deep. On the width, that'd depend on how sharp the flare is, but I'd start wider. If the passes are too close together, the wood in the middle might start breaking.

Looking at sub sonic's pics, the cuts look pretty close together, maybe 1/2" apart. He also started staggering what looked like 1/4" or 3/8" drill holes along the cuts too. I assume this is so the bend can hold more resin and be stronger. You might want to pm him and see what kind of info he'd be willing to share.

I do know his flare is the same size on every box, and he had someone help him figure exactly how to tune with that curve, so be ready to take that into account as well.

don't go more than 75% of the size of the wood, if YUou do you run the chance of just snapping the piece.

i always thought that would be fun to fiddle with when you're bored, fools make some bada$$ boxes like that

you could always experiment and find out, after several tries with scrap you'd have a good idea of what to do and what not
