Ok, hey everyone. Been reading a lot of the posts about tweeter placement on hear and elsewhere trying to get ready to teach myself fiberglass this weekend. After a lot of thought, and trying to not cut into my door, I had decided to mount my Alpine Type-R tweeters in the sill panel (inside, next to the side view mirrors). Then I read this from CDT (http://www.cdtaudio.com/speaker_placemant_08.htm) and it said that was "poor tweeter placement". So, I thought I throw this out to hear people's recommendations/opinions and to show you the two options I had been trying to decide between. I know I need to wire everything else and test with sticky tape, but I'd still like to hear everyone's thoughts--especially those familiar with the Type-R's since I understand their tweeters can be a little too "high" and need to be set down.

OPTION 1: Mount the tweeters in the sill panels essentially facing each other and using the provided "cups". This would give me slight adjustment after the install.

OPTION 2: Mount the tweeters in the sill panels essentially facing the driver's seat without the provided "cups" (due to space limitations). This would give me a fixed tweeter after the install.

Thanks in advance for any help/info. This forum is great and has really been a help for me.

This is more of seperation issue between the 2 drivers than just a bad placement of the tweeters.

You want to keep the drivers as close as possible to each other as you can. Typical rule is no more than 12" center to center distance of the two drivers.

In most cases, mounting the midrange in the stock door location and mounting the tweeter in the sail panel location will put the 2 drivers more than 12" apart causing seperation issues.

Hope this helps. \:bd\:

well I measured and my sill panels are only a little further than 12" from the speakers so I'm going to go for it. would still be interested in others' opitions on options 1, 2 (or 3?). Thanks

you want to get all speakers as far away from you as possible. sometimes that might only be the sail panel. if you're up to it, you could also mount them in the pillars, but make sure they're at least a half inch higher than the highest point on the dash.

fiberglassing them should only take a day, so from tonight until sunday morning, attach a piece of metal backstrapping to them and the sail panel, and play with aiming them at different angles until you find the way that sounds the best. you want the music to sound wide, yet you don't want the tweets to sound too harsh. i can't take credit for this tip either, it came from a seasoned vet, only he said he had his tweets like that for months before settling on a location.

anyways, mess with that and figure out what angle to use and go from there. oh, and post build pics! ;\)

Thanks for the advice Jonathan. The problem I'm running into with the sail panels are that I'll need to use like a paint can cap-sized tube to mount the tweets there with the cup. The type-r mounting cups are too large IMO. I hate to cut into the door but might have too. The a-pillars are an option but I'm trying to keep a stock look. Also, I'm going to have to install the rest of my system first to test 'em out properly.... trying to reconfigure my weekend now as it appears the weather Sunday will be "anti-install" weather \:\(

Definitely plan on pics. Will keep you posted.

apillar tweeters can be covered up with grill cloth. you cant see andy's tweeters and he has two in his apillar (regardless if he actually uses them).

True. I remember reading about his build... they did come out nice. Thanks.

Today my goal is to get everything working "enough" so that I can break out sticky tape or velcro and test some positions! Wish me luck!

Agreed...the a-pillars are also a good location for good imageing. Just be careful of unwanted reflections off the windshield. This can make your system sound worse than better.

Also, that location exposes the drivers to excessive heat and direct sunlight which can shorten the life span of the drivers.

I mounted a set of 4" comps in the a-pillars of my last ride and the sound quality and imageing was killer, check out the link below for the picture.
