It will produce sound, with no crossover on it playing music, it would produce music, It would not produce true subbass. Physics kind of get in the way of that.

You got it. Complete isolation of the front wave from the back wave is the goal. If the two meet, you get cancellation to some extent.

yup.
if you check team build logs, you'll see we even put these silicone deflex pads behind the speakers. that's to prevent the back wave from reflecting back and going through the cone.
my favorite speakers were the B&W nautilus speakers. that's one way to take care of the backwave:
