From my experience, corner loading a sub in my trunk usualy sounds much better than conventional placement (pushed up against backseat, facing away from driver). The bass gets deeper and a little louder. Because of the confined space, down firing a sub should essentialy be the same as corner loading right? And if thats the case then would a downfiring sealed box yeild a higher output simular to that of a ported box yet still sound good as far as sound quality goes?

i would say they are different, if they are in different locations. a down firing sub in the middle of the trunk will have a different response than a corner loaded sub. both in the corner would be similar i suspect. i would only run a down firing setup in the cabin, not a trunk. i'm sure it's been done before though.
you could add a loading board to the list as well.
at the end of the day the goal is to control constructive/destructive interference.

a loading board is typically placed 6-8" from the sub face. it can be enclosed on three sides or not at all. it gives similar response as a down firing sub but allows for more flexible installations - i.e. the sub doesn't have to face down.
i added a loading board to a box with four 12's and saw an increase in 5-6 dB minimum - all else equal. they can also work great for evening out the bass response in a room. just make sure they are very thick and very sturdy. any flex = cancellations.

well, if they were much larger and thicker i'd say yes. those are more cosmetic covers than anything. it is my understanding the loading baffle needs to be several times larger than the sub (i think it has to do with wavelengths of bass frequencies).

Okay koool. Lookin around on forums last night I found a thread that talked about this same idea.
http://www.caraudioforum.com/vbb3/showthread.php?t=190938
I figured if that concept works, maybe I get some 3/4" plexiglass and have it serve two purposes, both being a sweeeet grill and use it as a loading board to gain a little more output. Might just be my deciding factor to go sealed instead of ported for my jl.

note that the size of the board and it's distance from the speaker will determine performance. that typically requires testing.
test with 3/4" plywood first, different sizes and distances. use a SPL meter and your ears as a judge. once you find the perfect combination for your specific application you can make it out of plexi.
