Most people use plain polyfill you can buy at any fabric store or even wal-mart. Just don't put it in places that can get wet. It will hold moisture and cause corrosion.

parts express has some stuff that is better than poly and not as harmful as fiberglass. for cavities in a car - polyester fiber fill is your best bet. go to a local fabric store,

what? metal boxes? probably not. just look and see.

not sure the polyfill was the result of a blown sub - that was most likely due to overpowering and clipping. polyfill is not going to hold in any more heat than a closed box will. ported boxes to have the benefit of cooling.

the metal boxes are the rear fill, I guess you would say?

Poly fill did fry my subwoofer. I took my subwoofer out of its sealed subwoofer box and stuffed poly fill in it to the max. Then put the sub in the box with the polyfill and drilled the sub into the sub box. The subwoofer last about 15 mintues of driving before the subwoofer (which I had a warranty on) went. You could smell the voice coil after I took the subwoofer out of the box later that day.
I'm pretty sure it was the poly fill that did it? I'm not sure what else could of done it. I did that like 4 years ago. I'm trying to fill opening cavities in my car filled. For some reason this car I owen know has an open cavities in the rear speaker placement and I was thinking if I fill them to the max it make the speakers sound better? I was also thinking if I put to much in there that I will over heat my rear speakers? I'm at a roadblock right know, just trying to get some ideas?
Any info thanks
lata

usually, you only use a 50% max fill with polyfill. there is no way to prove that the polyfill was the reason for the sub failure.

fill all the cavities and voids as full as possible.

why is it bad to fill the holes behind speakers to the max? Its it cuz the speakers dont get enough air flow.

The voice coil needs to move air to cool itself. If you block that air or restrict it's movement, it can cause a sub to overheat. Packing more than 50% can also cause mechanical interference with the motor structure and even possibly get some sucked into the pole vent.

thats what I thought, thanks for info.

What about if I pack poly fill to the max in 6x9' rear fill, where the 6x9's sit?

Is there a way, a good way to put in the poly fill in the holes of 6x9 boxes and subwoofer boxes.

just pack the sides and back, leave some unblocked airspace behind the speaker.

when applied correctly, polyfill should help dissipate heat.
