I just picked up an Alpine CDA-D852 1.5 DIN head unit off of ebay. The seller says that the internal amp is blown, but the RCA outs work. I have all external power anyway, so that's not an issue for me, but just because I like my stuff to be 100% I may try to have the internal amp fixed.
Anyone know if this is a common problem with the 4 1.5 DIN head units Alpine made in late 90's (D852, D853, D855, D857)? As long as the RCA outs work, will the blown internal amp cause any other problems?
I got a REALLY good deal on it IMO, so I figured it was worth a try in my system.

I would do a lot of testing to make sure the unit works as expected before installing it or before deciding to return it. Actually I would think that's a risky buy.
The internal amps are usually tied in with the head units power supply. The 852 is that same way as far as I know. I am guessing there's going to be other power supply issues with the unit as well or you may have even bought a lemon. You should do all kindsa bench testing before attempting to install the unit into a car.
I recommend starting with testing to see if the unit will turn on. Second would be to test the pre outs.
It might be easier to test in the car if everything is already installed. Be sure to use a DMM to test voltage at the power supply and after you have the pre-outs connected to an amplifier test. Test pre-out voltage to make sure it is increasing with the volume.
Hope this helps and hopefully someone with more experience in electronics repair will be able to give better advice.

The HU arrived with damage from shipping The seller is offered a partial refund upon my request, so I'll only have $20 tied up in it after the pending refund clears with paypal. I ordered a harness that should be here soon, so I'll make sure I test it thouroughly. The faceplates on these things can be expensive, if you can find one, so I could always just sell that to recoup my loss if the HU is a dud.

Best of luck with it. That will be a great investment if works as needed for $20. Like you said with the faceplate, it's a good find whether or not it works.
