I just got a Kenwood DDX812 installed last weekend. I really like it, but I am having an issue with the mp3's on my usb flash drive. Most of the albums are ok, but a few have the songs out of order. I have tried editing the mp3 tags to ensure the track number property is set correctly, but it doesn't help. What else can I try?

Hmm I'll play around with mine today chedderslam. I primarily use an iPod but I don't seem to recall having that problem when I tested a flash drive.

I didn't see a problem but I only had time to try it real quick. I will try again tomorrow. I know in the manual it is very specific about how it orders them. First, have you tried a different USB device? I know the most basic one I had worked best for me.

A couple points that may help:

1.) Try a basic usb drive or in FAT or FAT32. I know I tried a Sandisk that had built-in management software on a "hidden" partition and the Kenwood didn't like that. I think I finally got it to work when I repartitioned it, but I had the best luck with a cheapy 256mb usb drive.

2.) I pulled the limitations off of Kenwood's site... They didn't list our model specifically, but I used the DDX512 which I think has the same restrictions.

Limitation of structure for the file and the folder
* Maximum number of folder layers 8
* Maximum number of folders (per folder) 126
* Maximum number of files (per folder) 255
* Maximum number of files (per device) 15000
* Maximum number of files per playlist 7000

Also:
The maximum number of characters for display
* File/Folder name 128 characters
* MP3 ID3 Tag 30 characters
* WMA Contents property 30 characters
* AAC song information 60 characters

- Number of characters is based on byte unit.
- File/Folder name is the number of the characters including the extensions.
- This unit can display the following versions of MP3 ID3 tag: version 1.0/ 1.1/ 2.2/ 2.3/ 2.4.
- AAC ID3 Tag cannot be displayed.

The drive is a 8 GB Sandisk Cruzer. I'm pretty sure I removed the u3 utility, but I will check again.

I have 7.5 gigs of music, but only 3 folders deep(root>artist>album). I should be within limits. I'm not sure what the file system is; I will check that.

I'll play around with it and let you know. Thank you very much for the help.

Sure. I know I have a 4gig Sandisk that was giving me some problems, then when I used the cheaper--no drivers needed--usb it worked OK. But since then I had to transfer some files to it on a Mac and I repartitioned it and then I finally got rid of the u3 utility that kept coming back. I'll have to try to test it with my DDX812 now.

cheddar: I finally put some songs on a USB stick and see your problem. I didn't at first because my albums are in folders. But when I had multiple files/albums in the root folder I got a few out of order. I'm not sure what criteria it is sorted on. \:\(

1. I might try updated firmware. (I have to do this.

2. If all your songs are in the root (probably there not if you have 8 gigs full), I might try putting them in a subfolder.

3. You can use a program like Media Monkey to automatically put the files into folder my album.

4. (I don't mean this sarcastically) You can use an iPod. The reason I mention this is, besides enhanced sorting, I was amazed how much better the same mp3's sounded off my iPod versus my usb stick. I don't have any EQ on the iPod set up. I'm not sure why this is.

5. Did you contact Kenwood? I haven't on this issue but have on others and they always answer.

Will keep u posted if I find out anything more.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but the DNX5120 does this too. It is both inconvenient and illogical. Who in their right mind would want their folder list sorted this way?

It is the single biggest gripe I have with this unit. Perhaps it is a big conspiracy to get us to all buy iPods and that adapter cable? Anyway I would suggest calling Kenwood like I did and tell them it's unacceptable.

Well it certainly IS strange. I like the conspiracy theory \:\)

I was thinking of installing a USB hard drive in my car but won't since the usb interface isn't great. Went with a 160 gig iPod instead.

I registered to this forum just to share my experience. I don't have a Kenwood head unit, but many USB interfaces read the files in the order they were stored in the flash drive. And many flash memory-based MP3 players do that as well. The solution is to store the files and folders in the order you want them read. The problem is that Windows will not do that, if you just drag and drop your folders.

The solution: I drag and drop everything I want to the USB flash drive, then use a couple of freeware programs to reorganize to my taste.

First, I use this program to organize folders alphabetically:
DriveSort:
http://www.anerty.net/software/file/DriveSort.php

DriveSort can organize files alphabetically as well, but I found another program that looks into ID3 tags, and sorts mp3 according to those tags. This is 'ReOrganize':
http://www.oliver-frietsch.de/reorganize/?lng=en

After sorting the folders with DriveSort (by artist name), I go into each folder, and sort the MP3 by year, album name, and track #. You need proper ID3 tags for that to work. (A little more info: UTF ID3 did not work for me, ISO ID3 did.)

ReOrganize doesn't do folders, otherwise it could take care of everything.

I hope this helps.
