Yamaha HTR-5990

Speakers-
Klipsch Synergy
Front Towers- F-3
Center - C-2
Surround- S-3
Sub- SUB12

Now i know car audio, but how do I go about approaching tuning this system? I have tuned the Yamaha to the best of my ability, but it still does not sound right. I mean this unit was over $1k alone and the speakers are way over that (worked at BB so I didnt pay that for them)...

Do i need to add an equalizer.... I mean I have no clue. Can anyone help?

sorry for the delay, i didn't notice this post until now. personally, i don't like the sound of Klipsch speakers. i haven't heard any that i've liked (and i've auditioned them dozens of times), but i don't like horn speakers for anything other than PA applications... (except for Avant Garde spherical horn speakers - but they are a over ten grand each.) Yamaha receivers have their own sound characteristics as well. So you may be fighting a losing battle. if you liked the sound of them in the store then you should be able to get it set up.

obviously, the first thing to check is polarity. next, location - location is extremely important with home theater. the dispersion pattern of the speakers needs to be taken into considerations. the horns have a specific dispersion. acoustical wall treatments may also help.

draw a picture or take a picture of your layout and surfaces.

an equalizer will be even more tricky, since the receiver does the decoding and an equalizer needs to be placed before the amp.

what is the power output vs speaker power handling? how loud are you trying to get? don't use the Yamaha sound fields. turn off all equalization and sound effects (except maybe DTS or Dolby Digital). get your hands on an RTA and find the peaks and valleys.

how is that helpful? explain what you don't like about them and what you like better in that price range. not saying i don't agree with you, i do.

personally, i think that a Paradigm or Definitive Technology set are much nicer - for the same coin.
