Hello,
I'm running an alpine mrp-650 (400 watts rms @ 2 ohms) on two Pioneer 12" w1207d2 subs (600 watts rms x 2 subs). I am fully aware that the subs are underpowered.

I recently took the car in to have the installers set the gains on the amp. Afterwards, I noticed that the subs did not hit as hard.Looking at the amp, the installers turned the gain down in order to compensate for turning the Bass EQ up. My question is what should I do or what would be the best way to set the gains so that the subs hit the hardest? I will probably be upgrading to a 1000-watt rms amplifier in the next few months.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

you need a bigger amp to get the output you desire. that shop did you a favor by turning the gain down. don't turn it up to compensate for a lack of power.

the gain is not a volume control, it is there to match the output of the headunit. if you have a 5 volt head, then set the gain at 5volts (this will be down more) most amps can't take more than 4 or 5 volts max.

I plan on upgrading to a 1000 watt amp in the next few months. The system doesn't sound bad with what I've done, I just want some more bump in the trunk.
