As many of you know, Car Audio Nationals was planning on co-locating with IASCA at their World Finals. With IASCA moving their finals to SBN, we were sorta up in the air.

Just wanted to let you know that we will be doing a TKE in Atlanta that same weekend along with MECA State Finals and a USACi Event. I am still finalizing all of the details, but we should have everything put in place by next week.

With that in mind, Arc Audio has stepped up and agreed to present the event.

Remember, CAN has a 3500 dollar prize purse available!!!

We have reserved some inside spaces for SQ Competitors.

We are keeping the registration fees VERY reasonable. Probably the lowest of the season for a large show. We want to draw as many folks as possible.

Anybody interested?

make plans in atlanta. have them involve you competing in a show. let a cousin pay your entry fee as a gift. compete in every organization since he's footing the bill. \:D

at this point, my vote is you have a speaker wired out of phase.

I really don't get why you can't get the Dyns to work. I have heard cars with those speakers that will shake your soul. Seriously. Somewhere you are doing something wrong either in the setup or installation of those speakers.

hell just look at Thumper's car with those same drivers. A bit of work and I'd turn his subs off.

Maybe there was something wrong with the install. Maybe it’s my car. After J himself did the install they still weren’t doing jack. There’s a lot of possibilities.

I got them to work eventually. Actually, after I removed the Alpines I dropped the Dyns back in. I had re-done the speaker rings/install. The dyns came to life then, but the f1’s still had more impact.

At this point, I’m hoping to get with Scott and do an AP install with the 4ohm Scans. After that, I’m done. I don’t care what it sounds like, it’ll get tuned and I’m rolling with it. I’m just ready to see my car put back together and in one piece again.

Have you spoken with Scott about doing an AP enclosure inside your door? I know that sounds easy---but it isn't. Ricky's doors are the way you want to do that, but he has the ability and the access to equipment/technology that allow him to make it easy.

I've done it the wood/fiberglass way. It isn't fun at all.

It would be easier to do floorpods, cut the floor open and vent them that way. You also wouldn't have to deal with door panels anymore.

I sent him an e-mail a couple days ago and asked if he’d be able to help me with it. He said he could. That’s really the extent of the talking. I’ve read a few tutorials on doing AP enclosures and understand the logic behind them. It’s just the fabrication that I’m concerned with, as you pointed out. Especially having never done it before. You know that I suck at fabrication; that’s obvious. So I definitely need some guidance, but am willing to do anything I can so I can learn how to do it.

Floorpods: You really think it’d be easier? I would think it’d be harder to do that route. When you say ‘vent’ is that not, in a sense, free-airing them? Surely you’re not meaning that as you’ve said never to IB them. \:confused\: I would think it’d be harder to put them in the floor area: I’d have to protect the speakers from the elements, and another issue would be making sure they’re protected yet can pass sound. Getting up into 200hz the wavelength shortens and it seems to me that would be an issue, where it wouldn’t be with subwoofer frequencies. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding you here. ?

Man, I don’t care, honestly. I’m already in that just due to the 3-way alone. Truthfully, I don’t expect to win. My car is more of a daily driver type setup. I do, however, want to compete so that I can get it sounding better and better. Maybe eventually get to the point where I can ‘compete’ with Andy and Steve, but you know me well enough to know I’m not stressing over that right now. ;\)

I'm just ready to finish putting this car together. I'm about to buy land, and I've got to start saving for a house. The sooner I can get the car wrapped up, the sooner I can start devoting my budget to something more useful than my car. I'm sure you guys understand. I really just want to be able to drive to a comp, put my car in, hang out with you guys, get some tips on how to make things better, and come back home. That's the real goal for me. Not to go out and win comps; just to enjoy the hobby instead of using all my available time working on it.

i think right now you're still modified. you haven't cut metal.

i think andy meant the dyns in kicks, not the scans.

Dyns are already gone. ;\)

I pulled up Matt Robert's install on DIY. If Andy was talking about doing something like Matt has, then I see it. Matt's floorpods are still AP vented. I really, really like the idea of moving the midbasses out of the doors but I don't think I have the real estate in the floor.

Mine are done like Matt's are done. They hammer. That is exactly what I was talking about. If my car has the room for that, so does yours. It just takes the ability to cut the floor, and then mold it in.

I hope you didn't trade the Dyns for those F#1's \:o

I really need to figure out a way to get myself and the accord down there for the show. Even if I don't compete (which I highly doubt I would)

Nah, I kept the Dyns for a while, but after the F1's messed up I needed to sell the Dyns to get Scans. *shrugs*

Oh, Andy, did you do that install yourself or was that something you had Jeff do? If you have build pics I’d like to see them.

I’m curious how you protect them from your feet. I’m VERY bad about shoving my feet into the floorboard when I drive so I can sit up and get situated. I have to shift around a lot when I drive b/c of my back so I’d worry about shoving my foot into the speaker if it’s anywhere in that vicinity.

It's a Honda! Don't tell me it won't make it. Bring it on over. Besides, I never got to hear that disc you were talking about that would rival the Pirates CD's on dynamics.

oh the car would make it, not sure the processor would, and I know the new one won't arrive by then.

As for the cd, you know i already forgoot which cd i was telling you about, although I found another one I wouldn't mind playing with in a few cars.

Scott,

I'm going to figure out rooms this week sometime. I think we have myself, Rick, Thumper, Steve, Robert and you so far that will need a room. Maybe Ben also, but not sure on that yet. I don't think any of the Schil guys are going besides Kirk and Dave--they usually stay with the Zapco people---but I'll be checking with them.

Pretty sure it's David, and Kirk. I'm just guessing based on the judges listed on the CAN site.

CAN 1 and 2 Seat should be a TON of fun. It is VERY exciting to have all three major Sound organizations represented with triple point shows!

yeah i'm still undecided about it. i wasn't happy with my car on Sunday, although it did pretty well. We'll see how it sounds by the weekend, and I'll go from there. Seeing that list of names makes me want to jump in though.

I know what you mean.

Ben are there going to be trophies for top 10 in each class? if so that might be the straw that breaks the camels back for me (i'm so petty)

Scott-
We are doing trophies for the top 5. I have a VERY cool "gift" for the next 5 that I would take rather than a trophy. :-) Depending on how many register, everybody may get one or you may have your choice of one of two gifts. \:\)

I am not a trophy whore personally. :-) 99% of mine end up back in the show promoter's hands. But we will make it worth your while!

If you THINK you are going to do it, I HAVE to know about CAN by Thursday. That allows me to build out the judging grids. :-) So everybody knows when they are being judged. :-)

Thumper-
I have already reserved the 3rd place trophy for you in all organizations. :-)

I will be doing the judging matrix on Friday at Noon. The Check Out Page comes down when I feel like it On Thursday. If you want in tenatively, send me an email to Ben (at) VollmerCentral.com and I will put you on the list. Easier to take you off than add you. :-)

Ben, I'll shoot you an email as well, but tentatively plan on myself doing CAN 1 seat. I'm not positive yet that I will do it as now that I've sat and listened to the car for a few days I just get the feeling that something is horribly wrong (no jokes there Jonathan), but I wanna cover myself incase I get the cojones to enter.

Maybe I oughtta schedule SBN and try to explain that I might miss the birth of our child . . . .

it is when I discover I have a few problems locating most frequencies over 4k. that and I am pretty sure I have no idea what i am doing. I suppose I could read a few threads here and there to fix that, but it's more fun to wing it and hope for the best.

i actually did most of what you were talking about last night, and got everything fixed up and tight, I think. I'm sure there are some fine tuning things that need to be done, but I really need a second set of ears to double check me. tonight ought to be interesting to see if I invoke the look of fear on Andy or not.

i have some, they just need to be uploaded. the place had the same lighting as elite, so all the indoor pics are yellow looking.

There were some INCREDIBLE cars. I finally got to see Mark Eldridge's Nascar. The thing is insane.

I came in 2nd in Street+ by 1.2 points to Aaron. I got prolly some of the best criticism of my car all year, and have some clear paths on what to do to fix the problems and make it better. I'm undecided on going to AL state finals, but if I do hopefully it'll be a lot more on.

In CAN, I came in 4th place. I couldn't believe it. They were calling out the names and when they got to the top 10, I assumed they overlooked mine. I was floored. That show really helped jumpstart me. It's been a crazy summer, and I was starting to lose focus. I'm all kinds of motivated right now.

I have to second that. A big thanks to Ben for putting together an amazing crew of judges, and organizing a spectacular show. I have to agree further about what a strange weekend, although I have to admit Richard Clark provided to of the funniest moments I think I can remember in all my years of car audio.

I had a great time at this show! Thanks to Ben for putting it on and keeping it all together. 4 different organizations, 400 or so cars, half inside the building and half out and it all ran smoothly.

Excellent job by David Hogan, Kirk Proffit and Richard "Never Likes My Car" Paladino for keeping up with everybody and an overall smooth and excellent job in judging.

Got to meet two of my heroes, Mark Eldridge and Richard Clark and go to listen to Mark's car which was the high point of the show.

Wanna say congratulations to Jonathan for laying the smack down in CAN. Dude, youve been competing for only 5 months and I can barely stay a point ahead of you in MECA and you wouldve slaughtered me if I did CAN. All I can say is I cant wait til next year when youre OUT OF MY CLASS! Youre making me a nervous wreck!

I am not sure. Q is SQ only and the scores over 210 are the full comp with install. I think Q is 210-220 total. Andy should know exactly.

looking over the results it reaffirms my thought that a stock car can sound just as good as a kickpanel/new dash car. Just needs more tuning.

yeah, I was floored to see what can be done with a 2 way. When I started competing, I had always planned on going 3 way next year, but now seeing what can be done, I'm pretty happy with what I have. I'd like to go Modified so I can play with acoustic treatments more, but that's about the only reason.

One of my highlights of the weekend was when a judge got out of my car and asked me what midrange I was running. When I told him it was just a two way with 6.5's in the doors, he looked confused for a couple of seconds.

...then Dave got in and helped me point out everything I need to work on.

Well we could just call him Kirkus Magnus. Or just Kong. Or we could call him 2nd in the points standings.

I guess the car will play more than Spanish Harlem. From both seats.

Guys-
I listened to Kirk's car on Sunday. Y'all better get your backsides in gear. He is VERY close to having something you never will... A Two Seat car. :-) His car was one of my favorites from the weekend... Now off your butts and start tuning. :-)

Easy. My class is the one where I’m in over my head.

Hey… what’s up with 2 seat? Will that be in Boaz? I figure I’ll give that a shot, too.

Should get my car back Thursday, and I got some work to do. Screw tuning… I gotta get the deadener off my seats!

ya never know. *shrugs*

I was somewhat kidding… placing emphasis on cleaning my car as it looks rough inside. I need to buy seat covers. Buying a car with tan interior was a huge mistake on my part.

i don't think there is any way you could get them with only two big shows left in the season, and you being in modex+ with andy and steve.

however, you should still come. like andy put it, it's like playing basketball with jordan. it only makes you better. as much as i gripe about aaron and kirk, my car wouldn't sound near as good and i wouldn't know near as much as i do if i was in regular street. get as much exposure as you can and come out of the gate full force next season. you live too close to too many strong sq champs to not be a serious contender next year.

There are 5 3X shows left. AL, SC, KY, TN, & IN state finals. Plenty of points left. You just have to travel.

Johnny-Why am I full of shyt? You spanked me on Saturday. I was the first one to make sure they didn't make a mistake. Just unlucky for you they dropped high and low. Otherwise you officialy won. I consider it a win for you. I told you congrats, shook your hand, partied with you Saturday night and everything.

I am sure next year I will get spanked several times before I get the Nitro right. Who knows, it may never be competitive or it may be killer. No way to tell.

Kirk, i have the distinct feeling it will be more killer than not. Just given your abilty and expirience. That said are you likely to compete at TN finals? I want one last shot before world finals to see where I stack up against you, cause face it, you're still the 3 time defending world champ, which means you get the target we all aim for.

I'm giving you hell. I never said you weren't a good sport, just that you wouldn't be cool with not winning. I have no doubt a loss would motivate the hell out of you. I'll have to beat you sometime so we can see. ;\)

from what i heard you won't have to do much. i'd hit dave up and get him to give you a clinic on what you need to work on. don't let him tune it, or do if you want to win, but see if you can hear the things he says are wrong before you let him get to fixing stuff. you have a good install now, it's time to start training your ears. ;\)

I'm planning on doing this all on my own.

Maybe it's that I've been driving my wife's car, but it sounded to me that the image was centered in front of me and not the dash. I'm going to keep Steve's settings on one preset, but do my own, too. I want to be able to figure things out on my own and let someone tell me what they think about my job. If I goof it up, I'll have Steve's settings to fall back on if needed.

Check my build thread on diy. I have a few pics up of the final product. He did an amazing job. Should have build pics Sunday as we didn't have anything to transfer them to today.

Be careful with the center. He may have set it up with the seat back all the way. We all tend to do that so anybody can get in the car and listen + it will get you back away from the speakers a little. Try it an see.

^ yup.

slide the seat all the way back, and mess with reclining it until you see a compromise in stage height.

use alpines formula for time alignment as a starter, then trust your ears from there.

SQ2 is an open class as World Finals which means no points required. Just need to be a MECA member.

Is that typically how you guys are judged?.. .seat all the way back?

If so, I'd HAVE to have different settings because I cannot drive with my seat any further back than about 15degrees (the notch right after straight up & down). But, if that's what the norm and suggested is, I'll have to tune my car for this.

Who cares what you drive like. You set your seat for judging, not the judge. Some cars I can't even touch the pedals. And as long as that is the place that works best for you, it works best for the judge.

I do not reccommend close in to the steering wheel. Some of us judges are big boys.

I know when I get in some cars the first thing I think is "do they drive like this?". ;\)

At this point a c701 would come in handy. If I'm sitting back in my car that far away from the dash it's going to be a pain to keep reaching for my h/u. Looks like I'll be investing in a c701 soon...

That's the main reason I put mine all the way back. My first few shows were done with my normal seat position, then a judge told me he couldn't get in the car. I had never thought about it till then. The seat position does change how it sounds too, so you need to tune for the position you're being judged with.

Pushing the seat itself back isn't the issue. It's just when it's tilted back far that I have a problem. I typically drive with the seat all the way back on the rails, and tilted about 15* back.
